“For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?
“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?
He replied to them, “Who among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?
“The landowner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Master, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from? ’
“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph,[fn] Simon, and Judas?
“What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go and search for the stray?

“ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
“Instead, will he not tell him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, get ready, and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink’?
“For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
“Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory? ”
They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us? ”
“Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring[fn] and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived? ”
“Aren’t there twelve hours in a day? ” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
“One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world? ”
“Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to people but to God.”

Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,
He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law?[fn] Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish?
because you are still worldly. For since there is envy and strife[fn] among you, are you not worldly and behaving like mere humans?
For whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not acting like mere humans?
And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief and remove from your congregation the one who did this?
For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside?
If any of you has a dispute against another, how dare you take it to court before the unrighteous,[fn] and not before the saints?
As it is, to have legal disputes against one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?
For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged[fn] to eat food offered to idols?
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
Consider the people of Israel.[fn] Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged by another person’s conscience?
