A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping,[fn] and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
and she refused to be consoled,
because they are no more.
He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
“Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter[fn] or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.
“For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.
“Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.[fn]
“Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord.
“But let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one.

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?
“And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread.
“If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you — you of little faith?
“Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye?
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
“On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name? ’
“The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.
“Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Now when he heard this, he said, “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick.
“Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”[fn]
Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ”
“Leave,” he said, “because the girl is not dead but asleep.” And they laughed at him.
“because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.
“When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.
“Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
“The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
“And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,[fn] truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,[fn] but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Then he proceeded to denounce the towns where most of his miracles were done, because they did not repent:
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”
He said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry:
“how he entered the house of God, and they ate[fn] the bread of the Presence — which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?
