“No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal.
“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?
“And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread.
“Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.
Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.
“And no one puts[fn] new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.[fn]
“For at that time there will be great distress,[fn] the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again.
“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows — neither the angels of heaven nor the Son[fn] — except the Father alone.
“Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
“For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be brought to light.
He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
Aware of this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts?
So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise.
“Now concerning that day or hour no one knows — neither the angels in heaven nor the Son — but only the Father.
Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry —
“A good tree doesn’t produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn’t produce good fruit.[fn]
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs aren’t gathered from thornbushes, or grapes picked from a bramble bush.
“That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[fn]
Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.”
“For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[fn] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.
“Consider the ravens: They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than the birds?
“Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.
“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
“But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me,[fn] a sinner! ’
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
