He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
Then he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.
He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.
“Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.’
“They will say to you, ‘See there! ’ or ‘See here! ’ Don’t follow or run after them.
“Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.
So they called for them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
“But they have been informed about you — that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or to live according to our customs.
And do not offer any parts[fn] of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand —
It is a good thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble.[fn]
Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old leaven or with the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
But actually, I wrote[fn] you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister and is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
Don’t become idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party.[fn]
Let us not commit sexual immorality as some of them did,[fn] and in a single day twenty-three thousand people died.
Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful things, not acting deceitfully or distorting the word of God, but commending ourselves before God to everyone’s conscience by an open display of the truth.
But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of[fn] among you, as is proper for saints.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: “If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.”
or to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. These promote empty speculations rather than God’s plan, which operates by faith.
Don’t be too quick to appoint[fn] anyone as an elder, and don’t share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God,[fn] who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me his prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God.
And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons:
My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly
or lose heart when you are reproved by him,
But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear them[fn] or be intimidated,
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
