Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ”
Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out? ”
Then Peter responded to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you. So what will there be for us? ”
“If this reaches the governor’s ears, we will deal with[fn] him and keep you out of trouble.”
After he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out? ”
“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ”
Some soldiers also questioned him, “What should we do? ”
He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
“You give them something to eat,” he told them.
“We have no more than five loaves and two fish,” they said, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
“We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.”
“But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day since these things happened.
“You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’? ”
Then the Jews said to one another, “Where does he intend to go that we won’t find him? He doesn’t intend to go to the Jewish people dispersed[fn] among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he?
“You’re doing what your father does.”
“We weren’t born of sexual immorality,” they said. “We have one Father — God.”
The Jews responded to him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you’re a Samaritan and have a demon? ”
“But we don’t know how he now sees, and we don’t know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he’s of age. He will speak for himself.”
So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
“We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man — we don’t know where he’s from.”
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we? ”
Then Thomas (called “Twin”[fn]) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him.”
Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man? ”
“I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect[fn] them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.
“I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.
“We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”
“I’m going fishing,” Simon Peter said to them.
“We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
“You killed the source[fn] of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.
“If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man, by what means he was healed,
“We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”
“So I immediately sent for you, and it was good of you to come. So now we are all in the presence of God to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord.”
“We ourselves are witnesses of everything he did in both the Judean country and in Jerusalem, and yet they killed him by hanging him on a tree.
“Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? ”
“And we ourselves proclaim to you the good news of the promise that was made to our ancestors.
“People! Why are you doing these things? We are people also, just like you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.
“Now then, why are you testing God by putting a yoke on the disciples’ necks that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear?
but we sailed away from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread. In five days we reached them at Troas, where we spent seven days.
We went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we were going to take Paul on board, because these were his instructions, since he himself was going by land.
When we completed our voyage[fn] from Tyre, we reached Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day.
When we heard this, both we and the local people pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem.
“With regard to the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter containing our decision that[fn] they should keep themselves from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what is strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
