“I baptize you with[fn] water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove[fn] his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”

“But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister[fn] will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults[fn] his brother or sister will be subject to the court.[fn] Whoever says, ‘You fool! ’ will be subject to hellfire.[fn]

“But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

“But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

“But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne;

“But I tell you, don’t resist[fn] an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

“But I tell you, love your enemies[fn] and pray for those who[fn] persecute you,

He said to him, “Am I to come and heal him? ”[fn]

“For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command.[fn] I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this! ’ and he does it.”

“Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.

“This is the one about whom it is written:

See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;

he will prepare your way before you.

“And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.

Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you? ’

“Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous[fn] because I’m generous? ’[fn]

Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? ”[fn]

“We are able,” they said to him.

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

“Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go.

“I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He[fn] is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

“This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.

“For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.

“then[fn] you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and I would have received my money[fn] back with interest when I returned.

Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord? ”

Judas, his betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi? ”

“You have said it,” he told him.

Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away because of you, I will never fall away.”

Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

“teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,[fn] I am with you always,[fn] to the end of the age.”

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:[fn]

See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;

he will prepare your way.[fn]

“I baptize you with[fn] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

When Herod heard of it, he said, “John, the one I beheaded, has been raised! ”

because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”

Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? ”

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“And as for the dead being raised ​— ​haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?

“Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many.

They began to be distressed and to say to him one by one, “Surely not I? ”

Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.”

And he said, “Abba,[fn] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ”

“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

“How can I know this? ” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”
