“You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me.
“Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers! ’[fn]
“You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.
“Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.
“But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,”
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.
“But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.[fn] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”
“Then he will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!
He said to them, “I am deeply grieved[fn] to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”
Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, “So, couldn’t you stay awake with me one hour?
He answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.
“But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban’ ” (that is, an offering devoted to God),
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it.
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father[fn] or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel,
“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,[fn] and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.
While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.”
He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve — the one who is dipping bread in the bowl with me.
And he said, “Abba,[fn] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’s knees and said, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord! ”
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.
“Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
“Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’
“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.
Someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
“But he will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you’re from. Get away from me, all you evildoers! ’
“ ‘Son,’[fn] he said to him, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
“Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do since my master is taking the management away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg.
“For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me:[fn] And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment.”
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me — nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
“Sir,” the disabled man answered, “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”
“There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.
“But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.
“The Father who sent me has himself testified about me. You have not heard his voice at any time, and you haven’t seen his form.
“You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.
“I am the one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
“The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.”
