BOOK 4
PSALM 90
God’s Eternity and the Brevity of Human Life.
A Prayer of [fn]Moses, the man of God.
1 Lord H136, You have been H1961 our [fn]dwelling H4583 place H4583 in all H1755 generations H1755.
2 Before H2962 the mountains H2022 were born H3205
[fn]Or You gave H2342 birth H2342 to the earth H776 and the world H8398,
Even from everlasting H5769 to everlasting H5769, You are God H410.
3 You turn H7725 mortals H582 back H7725 into dust H1793
And say H559, “Return H7725, you sons H1121 of mankind H120.”
4 For a thousand H505 years H8141 in Your sight H5869
Are like yesterday H3117 H8543 when H3588 it passes H5674 by H5674,
[fn]Or like a watch H821 in the night H3915.
5 You have [fn]swept H2229 them away H2229 like H2229 a H2229 flood H2229, they [fn]fall H1961 asleep H8142;
In the morning H1242 they are like grass H2682 that [fn]sprouts H2498 anew H2498.
6 In the morning H1242 it flourishes H6692 and [fn]sprouts H2498 anew H2498;
Toward evening H6153 it wilts H4448 and withers H3001 away.
7 For we have been consumed H3615 by Your anger H639,
And we have been terrified H926 by Your wrath H2534.
8 You have placed H7896 our guilty H5771 deeds H5771 before H5048 You,
Our hidden H5956 sins in the light H3974 of Your presence H6440.
9 For all H3605 our days H3117 have dwindled H6437 away H6437 in Your fury H5678;
We have finished H3615 our years H8141 like H3644 a [fn]sigh H1899.
10 As for the days H3117 of our [fn]life H8141, [fn]they contain seventy H7657 years H8141,
Or if H518 due to strength H1369, eighty H8084 years H8141,
Yet their pride H7296 is only trouble H5999 and tragedy H205;
For it quickly H2439 passes H1468, and we disappear H5774.
11 Who H4310 [fn]understands H3045 the power H5797 of Your anger H639
And Your fury H5678, according to the fear H3374 [fn]that is due You?
12 So H3651 teach H3045 us to number H4487 our days H3117,
That we may [fn]present H935 to You a heart H3824 of wisdom H2451.
13 Do return H7725, LORD H3068; how H4970 long H5704 H4970 will it be?
And [fn]be H5162 sorry H5162 for Your servants H5650.
14 Satisfy H7646 us in the morning H1242 with Your graciousness H2617,
That we may sing H7442 for H7442 joy H7442 and rejoice H8055 all H3605 our days H3117.
15 Make H8055 us glad H8055 [fn]according to the days H3117 You have afflicted H6031 us,
And the years H8141 we have seen H7200 [fn]evil H7451.
16 Let Your work H6467 appear H7200 to Your servants H5650
And Your majesty H1926 [fn]to their children H1121.
17 May the kindness H5278 of the Lord H136 our God H430 be upon us;
And [fn]confirm H3559 for us the work H4639 of our hands H3027;
