The Lures of the Prostitute
1 My son H1121, keep H8104 my words H561
And treasure H6845 my commandments H4687 within H854 you.
2 Keep H8104 my commandments H4687 and live H2421,
And my [fn]teaching H8451 as the [fn]apple H380 of your eye H5869.
3 Bind H7194 them on your fingers H676;
Write H3789 them on the tablet H3871 of your heart H3820.
4 Say H559 to wisdom H2451, “You are my sister H269,”
And call H7121 understanding H998 your intimate H4129 friend H4129,
5 So that they may keep H8104 you from an [fn]adulteress H802 H2114,
From the foreigner H5237 who flatters H2505 with her words H561.
6 For at the window H2474 of my house H1004
I looked H8259 out H8259 through H1157 my lattice H822,
7 And I saw H7200 among the naive H6612,
And discerned H995 among the [fn]youths H1121
A young H5288 man H5288 lacking H2638 [fn]sense H3820,
8 Passing H5674 through the street H7784 near H681 her corner H6438;
And he walks H6805 along H6805 the way H1870 to her house H1004,
9 In the twilight H5399, in the [fn]evening H6153 H3117,
In the [fn]middle H380 of the night H3915 and the darkness H653.
10 And behold H2009, a woman H802 comes to meet H7122 him,
Dressed H7897 as a prostitute H2181 and cunning H5341 of heart H3820.
11 She is boisterous H1993 and rebellious H5637,
Her feet H7272 do not remain H7931 at home H1004;
12 She is now H6471 in the streets H2351, now H6471 in the public H7339 squares H7339,
And lurks H693 by every H3605 corner H6438.
13 So she seizes H2388 him and kisses H5401 him,
[fn]And with a brazen H5810 face H6440 she says H559 to him:
14 “[fn]I was due H5921 to offer H2077 peace H8002 offerings H8002;
Today H3117 I have paid H7999 my vows H5088.
15 “Therefore H5921 H3651 I have come H3318 out H3318 to meet H7122 you,
To seek H7836 your presence H6440 diligently H7836, and I have found H4672 you.
16 “I have spread H7234 my couch H6210 with coverings H4765,
With colored H2405 linens H330 of Egypt H4714.
17 “I have sprinkled H5130 my bed H4904
With myrrh H4753, aloes H174, and cinnamon H7076.
18 “Come H1980, let’s drink H7301 our fill H7301 of love H1730 until H5704 morning H1242;
Let’s delight H5965 ourselves with caresses H159.
19 “For [fn]my husband H376 is not at home H1004;
He has gone H1980 on a long H4480 H7350 journey H1870.
20 “He has taken H3947 a bag H6872 of money H3701 [fn]with him.
At the full H3677 moon H3677 he will come H935 home H1004.”
21 With her many H7230 persuasions H3948 she entices H5186 him;
With her [fn]flattering H2507 lips H8193 she seduces H5080 him.
22 Suddenly H6597 he follows H1980 H310 her
As an ox H7794 goes H935 to the slaughter H2874,
Or as [fn]one walks H5914 in H5914 ankle H5914 bracelets H5914 to the discipline H4148 of a fool H191,
23 Until H5704 an arrow H2671 pierces H6398 through H6398 his liver H3516;
As a bird H6833 hurries H4116 to the snare H6341,
So he does not know H3045 that it will cost him his life H5315.
24 Now H6258 therefore, my sons H1121, listen H8085 to me,
And pay H7181 attention H7181 to the words H561 of my mouth H6310.
25 Do not let your heart H3820 turn H7847 aside H7847 to her ways H1870,
Do not stray H8582 into her paths H5410.
26 For many H7227 are the [fn]victims H2491 she has brought H5307 to H5307 ruin H5307,
And numerous H6099 are all H3605 those slaughtered H2026 by her.
