Laborers in the Vineyard

1 “For the kingdom ^G932 of heaven ^G3772 is like ^G3664 [fn]a landowner ^G3617 who ^G3748 went ^G1831 out ^G1831 early ^G260 in the morning ^G4404 to hire ^G3409 laborers ^G2040 for his vineyard ^G290.

2 When he had agreed ^G4856 with the laborers ^G2040 for a [fn]denarius ^G1220 for the day ^G2250, he sent ^G649 them into his vineyard ^G290. 3 And he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 about ^G4012 the [fn]third ^G5154 hour ^G5610 and saw ^G3708 others ^G243 standing ^G2476 idle ^G692 in the marketplace ^G58; 4 and to those ^G1565 he said ^G3004, ‘You go ^G5217 into the vineyard ^G290 also ^G2532, and whatever ^G3739 G1437 is right ^G1342, I will give ^G1325 you.’ And so they went ^G565. 5 Again ^G3825 he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 about ^G4012 the [fn]sixth ^G1623 and the ninth ^G1766 hour ^G5610, and did ^G4160 [fn]the same ^G5615 thing ^G5615. 6 And about ^G4012 the [fn]eleventh ^G1734 hour he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 and found ^G2147 others ^G243 standing ^G2476 around; and he *said ^G3004 to them, ‘Why ^G5101 have you been standing ^G2476 here ^G5602 idle ^G692 all ^G3650 day ^G2250 long ^G3650?’ 7 They *said ^G3004 to him, ‘Because ^G3754 no ^G3762 one ^G3762 hired ^G3409 us.’ He *said ^G3004 to them, ‘You go ^G5217 into the vineyard ^G290 too ^G2532.’

8 “Now ^G1161 when evening ^G3798 came ^G1096, the [fn]owner ^G2962 of the vineyard ^G290 *said ^G3004 to his foreman ^G2012, ‘Call ^G2564 the laborers ^G2040 and pay ^G591 them their wages ^G3408, starting ^G757 with the last ^G2078 group to the first ^G4413.’ 9 When ^G2532 those ^G3588 hired about ^G4012 the eleventh ^G1734 hour ^G5610 came ^G2064, each ^G303 one ^G303 received ^G2983 a [fn]denarius ^G1220. 10 And so when those ^G3588 hired first ^G4413 came ^G2064, they thought ^G3543 that they would receive ^G2983 more ^G4183; [fn]but each ^G303 of them also ^G2532 received ^G2983 a denarius ^G1220. 11 When they received ^G2983 it, they grumbled ^G1111 at the landowner ^G3617, 12 saying ^G3004, ‘These ^G3778 who were hired last ^G2078 worked ^G4160 only one ^G1520 hour ^G5610, and you have made ^G4160 them equal ^G2470 to us who ^G3588 have borne ^G941 the burden ^G922 of the day’s ^G2250 work and the scorching ^G2742 heat ^G2742.’ 13 But he answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to one ^G1520 of them, ‘Friend ^G2083, I am doing ^G91 you no ^G3756 wrong ^G91; did you not agree ^G4856 with me for a denarius ^G1220? 14 Take ^G142 what ^G3588 is yours ^G4674 and go ^G5217; but I want ^G2309 to give ^G1325 to this ^G3778 last ^G2078 person ^G2078 the same ^G2532 as to you. 15 Is it not lawful ^G1832 for me to do ^G4160 what ^G3739 I want ^G2309 with what ^G3588 is my own ^G1699? Or ^G2228 is your eye ^G3788 [fn]envious ^G4190 because ^G3754 I am ^G1510 [fn]generous ^G18?’ 16 So ^G3779 the last ^G2078 shall be first ^G4413, and the first ^G4413, last ^G2078.”

Death, Resurrection Foretold

17 As Jesus ^G2424 was ^G3195 about ^G3195 to ^G3195 go ^G305 up ^G305 to Jerusalem ^G2414, He took ^G3880 the twelve ^G1427 disciples aside by themselves ^G2398, and on the road ^G3598 He said ^G3004 to them,

18 “Behold ^G2400, we are going ^G305 up ^G305 to Jerusalem ^G2414, and the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 will be [fn]handed ^G3860 over ^G3860 to the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and scribes ^G1122, and they will condemn ^G2632 Him to death ^G2288, 19 and they will hand ^G3860 Him over ^G3860 to the Gentiles ^G1484 to mock ^G1702 and flog ^G3146 and crucify ^G4717, and on the third ^G5154 day ^G2250 He will be raised ^G1453 up ^G1453.”

Request for Preferred Treatment

20 Then ^G5119 the mother ^G3384 of the [fn]sons ^G5207 of Zebedee ^G2199 came ^G4334 to [fn]Jesus with her sons ^G5207, bowing ^G4352 down ^G4352 and making ^G154 a request ^G154 of Him.

21 And He said ^G3004 to her, “What ^G5101 do you desire ^G2309?” She *said ^G3004 to Him, “Say ^G3004 that in Your kingdom ^G932 these ^G3778 two ^G1417 sons ^G5207 of mine ^G1473 shall sit ^G2523, one ^G1520 at Your right ^G1188, and one ^G1520 at Your left ^G2176.” 22 But Jesus ^G2424 replied ^G611 G3004, “You do not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 you are asking ^G154. Are you able ^G1410 to drink ^G4095 the cup ^G4221 that I am ^G3195 about ^G3195 to ^G3195 drink ^G4095?” They *said ^G3004 to Him, “We are able ^G1410.” 23 He *said ^G3004 to them, “My cup ^G4221 you shall drink ^G4095; but to sit ^G2523 at My right ^G1188 and at My left ^G2176 is not Mine ^G1699 to give ^G1325, but it is for those for whom ^G3739 it has been prepared ^G2090 by My Father ^G3962.”

24 And after hearing ^G191 this, the other ten ^G1176 disciples became indignant ^G23 with the two ^G1417 brothers ^G80. 25 But Jesus ^G2424 called ^G4341 them to Himself and said ^G3004, “You know ^G6063 that the rulers ^G758 of the Gentiles ^G1484 domineer ^G2634 over ^G2634 them, and [fn]those in high ^G3173 position ^G3173 exercise ^G2715 authority ^G2715 over ^G2715 them. 26 It [fn]is not this ^G3779 way ^G3779 among ^G1722 you, but whoever ^G3739 G1437 wants ^G2309 to become ^G1096 [fn]prominent ^G3173 among ^G1722 you shall be your servant ^G1249, 27 and whoever ^G3739 G1437 desires ^G2309 to be first ^G4413 among ^G1722 you shall be your slave ^G1401; 28 just ^G5618 as the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 did not come ^G2064 to be served ^G1247, but to serve ^G1247, and to give ^G1325 His [fn]life ^G5590 as a ransom ^G3083 for many ^G4183.”

Sight for Those Who Are Blind

29 As they were leaving ^G1607 Jericho ^G2410, a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 followed ^G190 Him.

30 And two ^G1417 people ^G5185 who ^G5185 were ^G5185 blind ^G5185, sitting ^G2521 by the road ^G3598, hearing ^G191 that Jesus ^G2424 was passing ^G3855 by, cried ^G2896 out ^G2896, “Lord ^G2962, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on us, Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138!” 31 But the crowd ^G3793 sternly ^G2008 warned ^G2008 them to be quiet ^G4623; yet ^G1161 they cried ^G2896 out ^G2896 all ^G3173 the ^G3173 more ^G3173, “Lord ^G2962, Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on us!” 32 And Jesus ^G2424 stopped ^G2476 and called ^G5455 them, and said ^G3004, “What ^G5101 do you want ^G2309 Me to do ^G4160 for you?” 33 They *said ^G3004 to Him, “Lord ^G2962, we want our eyes ^G3788 to be opened ^G455.” 34 Moved ^G4697 with ^G4697 compassion ^G4697, Jesus ^G2424 touched ^G681 their eyes ^G3659; and immediately ^G2112 they regained ^G308 their sight ^G308 and followed ^G190 Him.
