Job’s Life Seems Futile
1 “[fn]Is a person H582 not forced H6635 to H6635 labor H6635 on earth H776,
And are his days H3117 not like the days H3117 of a hired H7916 worker H7916?
2 “As a slave H5650 pants H7602 for the shade H6738,
And as a hired H7916 worker H7916 who eagerly H6960 waits H6960 for his wages H6467,
3 So H3651 I am allotted H5157 worthless H7723 months H3391,
And nights H3915 of trouble H5999 are apportioned H4487 to me.
4 “When H518 I lie H7901 down H7901, I say H559,
‘When H4970 shall I arise H6965?’
But the night H6153 continues H4058,
And I am H7646 continually H7646 tossing H5076 until H5704 dawn H5399.
5 “My flesh H1320 is clothed H3847 with maggots H7415 and a crust H1487 of dirt H6083,
My skin H5785 hardens H7280 and [fn]oozes H4549.
6 “My days H3117 are H7043 swifter H7043 than H4480 a weaver’s H708 shuttle H708,
And they come H3615 to H3615 an H3615 end H3615 without H657 hope H8615.
7 “Remember H2142 that my life H2416 is a mere breath H7307;
My eye H5869 will not see H7200 goodness H2896 again H7725.
8 “The eye H5869 of him who sees H7210 me will no H3808 longer look H7789 at H7789 me;
Your eyes H5869 will be on me, but I will not H369 exist H369.
9 “When a cloud H6051 vanishes H3615, it is gone H1980;
In H3651 the H3651 same H3651 way H3651 one who goes H3381 down H3381 to [fn]Sheol H7585 does not come H5927 up H5927.
10 “He will not return H7725 to his house H1004 again H5750,
Nor H3808 will his place H4725 know H5234 about H5234 him anymore H5750.
11 “Therefore H1571 I will not restrain H2820 my mouth H6310;
I will speak H1696 in the anguish H6862 of my spirit H7307,
I will complain H7878 in H7878 the bitterness H4751 of my soul H5315.
12 “Am I the sea H3220, or H518 the sea H8577 monster H8577,
That You set H7760 a guard H4929 over H5921 me?
13 “If H3588 I say H559, ‘My couch H6210 will comfort H5162 me,
My bed H4904 will [fn]ease H5375 my complaint H7879,’
14 Then You frighten H2865 me with dreams H2472,
And terrify H1204 me by visions H2384,
15 So that my soul H5315 would choose H977 suffocation H4267,
Death H4194 rather H4480 than H4480 my [fn]pains H6106.
16 “I [fn]waste H3988 away H3988; I will not live H2421 forever H5769.
Leave H2308 me alone H4480, for my days H3117 are only a breath H1892.
17 “What H4100 is man H582 that You exalt H1431 him,
And that You [fn]are H7896 concerned H7896 H3820 about H413 him,
18 That You examine H6485 him every morning H1242
And put H974 him to H974 the H974 test H974 every moment H7281?
19 “[fn]Will You never H3808 turn H8159 Your gaze H8159 away H8159 from me,
Nor H3808 leave H7503 me alone H7503 until H5704 I swallow H1104 my spittle H7536?
20 “Have I sinned H2398? What H4100 have I done H6466 to You,
Watcher H5341 of mankind H120?
Why H4100 have You made H7760 me Your target H4645,
So that I am H1961 a burden H4853 to myself?
21 “Why H4100 then do You not forgive H5375 my wrongdoing H6588
And take H5674 away H5674 my [fn]guilt H5771?
For now H6258 I will lie H7901 down H7901 in the dust H6083;
And You will search H7836 for me, but I will no H369 longer exist H369.”
