Job’s Lament

1 Afterward ^H310 H3651 Job ^H347 opened ^H6605 his mouth ^H6310 and cursed ^H7043 [fn]the day ^H3117 of his birth.

2 And Job ^H347 [fn]said ^H6030 H559,

3 “May the day ^H3117 on which I was to be born ^H3205 perish ^H6,

As well as the night ^H3915 which said ^H559, ‘A [fn]boy ^H1397 is conceived ^H2029.’

4 “May that day ^H3117 be darkness ^H2822;

May God ^H433 above ^H4605 not care ^H1875 for it,

Nor ^H408 light ^H5105 shine ^H3313 on it.

5 “May darkness ^H2822 and black ^H6757 gloom ^H6757 claim ^H1350 it;

May a cloud ^H6053 settle ^H7931 on it;

May the blackness ^H3650 of the day ^H3117 terrify ^H1204 it.

6 “As for that night ^H3915, may darkness ^H652 seize ^H3947 it;

May it not rejoice ^H2302 among the days ^H3117 of the year ^H8141;

May it not come ^H935 into the number ^H4557 of the months ^H3391.

7 “Behold ^H2009, may that night ^H3915 be barren ^H1565;

May no ^H408 joyful ^H7445 shout ^H7445 enter ^H935 it.

8 “May those curse ^H6895 it who curse ^H779 the day ^H3117,

Who are [fn]prepared ^H6264 to disturb ^H5782 Leviathan ^H3882.

9 “May the stars ^H3556 of its twilight ^H5399 be darkened ^H2821;

14 With kings ^H4428 and counselors ^H3289 of the earth ^H776,

Who rebuilt ^H1129 ruins ^H2723 for themselves;

Who were filling ^H4390 their houses ^H1004 with silver ^H3701.

16 “Or ^H176 like a miscarriage ^H5309 which is [fn]hidden ^H2934, I would not exist ^H1961,

As infants ^H5768 that never ^H3808 saw ^H7200 light ^H216.

17 “There ^H8033 the wicked ^H7563 cease ^H2308 from raging ^H7267,

And there ^H8033 the [fn]weary ^H3019 are ^H5117 at ^H5117 rest ^H5117.

18 “The prisoners ^H615 are ^H7599 at ^H7599 ease ^H7599 together ^H3162;

They do not hear ^H8085 the voice ^H6963 of the taskmaster ^H5065.

19 “The small ^H6996 and the great ^H1419 are there ^H8033,

And the slave ^H5650 is free ^H2670 from his master ^H113.

20 “Why ^H4100 is light ^H216 given ^H5414 to one burdened ^H6001 with ^H6001 grief ^H6001,

And life ^H2416 to the bitter ^H4751 of soul ^H5315,

21 Who [fn]long ^H2442 for death ^H4194, but there ^H369 is ^H369 none ^H369,

22 Who are filled ^H8056 with ^H8056 jubilation ^H8056 H1524,

23 “Why is light given to a man ^H1397 whose ^H834 way ^H1870 is hidden ^H5641,

And I am ^H5117 not at ^H5117 rest ^H5117, but turmoil ^H7267 comes ^H935.”
