Jesus Is the Vine—Followers Are Branches

1 “I am ^G1510 the true ^G228 vine ^G288, and My Father ^G3962 is the vinedresser ^G1092.

2 Every ^G3956 branch ^G2814 in Me that does not bear ^G5342 fruit ^G2590, He takes ^G142 away ^G142; and every ^G3956 branch that bears ^G5342 fruit ^G2590, He [fn]prunes ^G2508 it so ^G2443 that ^G2443 it may bear ^G5342 more ^G4183 fruit ^G2590. 3 You are already ^G2235 [fn]clean ^G2513 because ^G1223 of the word ^G3056 which ^G3739 I have spoken ^G2980 to you. 4 Remain ^G3306 in Me, [fn]and I in you. Just ^G2531 as ^G2531 the branch ^G2814 cannot ^G1410 G3756 bear ^G5342 fruit ^G2590 [fn]of itself ^G1438 [fn]but must remain ^G3306 in the vine ^G288, so ^G3779 neither ^G3761 can you unless ^G1437 G3361 you remain ^G3306 in Me. 5 I am ^G1510 the vine ^G288, you are the branches ^G2814; the one who remains ^G3306 in Me, and I in him [fn]bears ^G5342 much ^G4183 fruit ^G2590, for apart ^G5565 from Me you can ^G1410 do ^G4160 nothing ^G3756 G3762. 6 If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 does not remain ^G3306 in Me, he is thrown ^G906 away ^G1854 like ^G5613 a branch ^G2814 and dries ^G3583 up; and they gather ^G4863 them and throw ^G906 them into the fire ^G4442, and they are burned ^G2545. 7 If ^G1437 you remain ^G3306 in Me, and My words ^G4487 remain ^G3306 in you, ask ^G154 whatever ^G3739 G1437 you wish ^G2309, and it will be done ^G1096 for you. 8 My Father ^G3962 is glorified ^G1392 by this ^G3778, that you bear ^G5342 much ^G4183 fruit ^G2590, and so [fn]prove ^G1096 to be My disciples ^G3101. 9 Just ^G2531 as ^G2531 the Father ^G3962 has loved ^G25 Me, I also ^G2532 have loved ^G25 you; remain ^G3306 in My love ^G26. 10 If ^G1437 you keep ^G5083 My commandments ^G1785, you will remain ^G3306 in My love ^G26; just ^G2531 as ^G2531 I have kept ^G5083 My Father’s ^G3962 commandments ^G1785 and remain ^G3306 in His love ^G26. 11 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 I have spoken ^G2980 to you so ^G2443 that ^G2443 My joy ^G5479 may be in you, and that your joy ^G5479 may be made ^G4137 full ^G4137.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

12 “This ^G3778 is My commandment ^G1785, that you love ^G25 one ^G240 another ^G240, just ^G2531 as ^G2531 I have loved ^G25 you.

13 Greater ^G3173 love ^G26 has ^G2192 no ^G3762 one ^G3762 than this ^G3778, that a person ^G5100 will lay ^G5087 down ^G5087 his life ^G5590 for his friends ^G5384. 14 You are My friends ^G5384 if ^G1437 you do ^G4160 what ^G3739 I command ^G1781 you. 15 No ^G3765 longer ^G3765 do I call ^G3004 you slaves ^G1401, for the slave ^G1401 does not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 his master ^G2962 is doing ^G4160; but I have called ^G3004 you friends ^G5384, because ^G3754 all ^G3956 things ^G3956 that I have heard ^G191 from My Father ^G3962 I have made ^G1107 known ^G1107 to you. 16 You did not choose ^G1586 Me but I chose ^G1586 you, and appointed ^G5087 you that you would go ^G5217 and bear ^G5342 fruit ^G2590, and that your fruit ^G2590 would remain ^G3306, so ^G2443 that ^G2443 whatever ^{G3739 G5100 G302} you ask ^G154 of the Father ^G3962 in My name ^G3686 He may give ^G1325 to you. 17 This ^G3778 I command ^G1781 you, that you love ^G25 one ^G240 another ^G240.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

18 “If ^G1487 the world ^G2889 hates ^G3404 you, [fn]you know ^G1097 that it has hated ^G3404 Me before ^G4413 it hated you.

19 If ^G1487 you were of the world ^G2889, the world ^G2889 would love ^G5368 you as its own ^G2398; but because ^G3754 you are not of the world ^G2889, but I chose ^G1586 you out ^G1586 of the world ^G2889, because ^G1223 of this ^G3778 the world ^G2889 hates ^G3404 you. 20 Remember ^G3421 the word ^G3056 that I said ^G3004 to you, ‘A slave ^G1401 is not greater ^G3173 than his master ^G2962.’ If ^G1487 they persecuted ^G1377 Me, they will persecute ^G1377 you as ^G2532 well ^G2532; if ^G1487 they followed ^G5083 My word ^G3056, they will follow ^G5083 yours ^G5212 also ^G2532. 21 But all ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 they will do ^G4160 to you on ^G1223 account ^G1223 of ^G1223 My name ^G3686, because ^G3754 they do not know ^G6063 the One ^G3588 who sent ^G3992 Me. 22 If ^G1487 I had not come ^G2064 and spoken ^G2980 to them, they would not have ^G2192 [fn]sin ^G266; but now ^G3568 they have ^G2192 no ^G3756 excuse ^G4392 for their sin ^G266. 23 The one who hates ^G3404 Me hates ^G3404 My Father ^G3962 also ^G2532. 24 If ^G1487 I had not done ^G4160 among ^G1722 them the works ^G2041 which ^G3739 no ^G3762 one ^G3762 else ^G243 did ^G4160, they would not have ^G2192 [fn]sin ^G266; but now ^G3568 they have both ^G2532 seen ^G3708 and hated ^G3404 Me and My Father ^G3962 as ^G2532 well ^G2532. 25 But this has happened so ^G2443 that ^G2443 the word ^G3056 that is written ^G1125 in their Law ^G3551 will be fulfilled ^G4137: ‘THEY HATED ^G3404 ME FOR ^G1432 NO ^G1432 REASON ^G1432.’

26 “When ^G3752 the [fn]Helper ^G3875 comes ^G2064, whom ^G3739 I will send ^G3992 to you from the Father ^G3962, namely, the Spirit ^G4151 of truth ^G225 who ^G3739 comes ^G1607 from the Father ^G3962, He will testify ^G3140 about ^G4012 Me, 27 and [fn]you are testifying ^G3140 as ^G2532 well ^G2532, because ^G3754 you have been ^G1510 with Me from the beginning ^G746.
