But you have forgotten the LORD, your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth.
You are in constant dread all day long
because of the fury of the oppressor,
who has set himself to destroy.
But where is the fury of the oppressor?
Look down from heaven and see
from your lofty home — holy and beautiful.
Where is your zeal and your might?
Your yearning[fn] and your compassion
are withheld from me.
They stopped asking, “Where is the LORD
who brought us from the land of Egypt,
who led us through the wilderness,
through a land of deserts and ravines,
through a land of drought and darkness,[fn]
a land no one traveled through
and where no one lived? ”
The priests quit asking, “Where is the LORD? ”
The experts in the law no longer knew me,
and the rulers rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by[fn] Baal
and followed useless idols.
But where are your gods you made for yourself?
Let them rise up and save you
in your time of disaster if they can,
for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.
Look up and see
those coming from the north.
Where is the flock entrusted to you,
the sheep that were your pride?
“Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and this land’?
They cry out to their mothers,

When the wall has fallen, will you not be asked, “Where’s the whitewash you plastered on it? ”
Let the priests, the LORD’s ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.

“Have pity on your people, LORD,
and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God? ’ ”
Then my enemy will see,
and she will be covered with shame,
the one who said to me,
“Where is the LORD your God? ”
My eyes will look at her in triumph;
at that time she will be trampled
like mud in the streets.
Where is the lions’ lair,
or the feeding ground of the young lions,
where the lion and lioness prowled,
and the lion’s cub,
with nothing to frighten them away?
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of me? says the LORD of Armies to you priests, who despise my name.”
Yet you ask, “How have we despised your name? ”
