So the LORD God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you? ”

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel? ”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s guardian? ”

He said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going? ”

She replied, “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai.”

He will say, “Where are their gods,

the ‘rock’ they found refuge in?

Then the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me. He looked like the awe-inspiring angel of God. I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name.

Saul approached Samuel in the city gate and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is? ”

“Am I supposed to take my bread, my water, and my meat that I butchered for my shearers and give them to these men? I don’t know where they are from.”

“Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of[fn] Sepharvaim, Hena, or Ivvah? ’ ”

Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah came up, hit Micaiah on the cheek, and demanded, “Which way did the spirit from the LORD leave me to speak to you? ”

King Ahasuerus spoke up and asked Queen Esther, “Who is this, and where is the one who would devise such a scheme? ”[fn]

The LORD asked Satan, “Where have you come from? ”

“From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered him, “and walking around on it.”

he will vanish forever like his own dung.

Those who know[fn] him will ask, “Where is he? ”

But where can wisdom be found,

and where is understanding located?

Where then does wisdom come from,

and where is understanding located?

But no one asks, “Where is God my Maker,

who provides us with songs in the night,

Where is the road to the home of light?

Do you know where darkness lives,

What road leads to the place where light is dispersed?[fn]

Where is the source of the east wind that spreads across the earth?

It is not for kings, Lemuel,

it is not for kings to drink wine

or for rulers to desire beer.

I explored with my mind the pull of wine on my body ​— ​my mind still guiding me with wisdom — and how to grasp folly, until I could see what is good for people to do under heaven[fn] during the few days of their lives.

In the morning sow your seed,

and at evening do not let your hand rest,

because you don’t know which will succeed,

whether one or the other,

or if both of them will be equally good.

Where then are your wise men?

Let them tell you and reveal

what the LORD of Armies has planned against Egypt.

This is what the LORD says:

Where is your mother’s divorce certificate

that I used to send her away?

Or to which of my creditors did I sell you?

Look, you were sold for your iniquities,

and your mother was sent away

because of your transgressions.

This is what the LORD says:

Heaven is my throne,

and earth is my footstool.

Where could you possibly build a house for me?

And where would my resting place be?

Why should I forgive you?

Your children have abandoned me

and sworn by those who are not gods.

I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery;

they gashed themselves at the[fn] prostitute’s house.

This is what the LORD says:

Stand by the roadways and look.

Ask about the ancient paths,

“Which is the way to what is good? ”

Then take it

and find rest for yourselves.

But they protested, “We won’t! ”

“Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and this land’?

Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from? ”

Your court officials are like the swarming locust,

and your scribes like clouds of locusts,

which settle on the walls on a cold day;

when the sun rises, they take off,

and no one knows where they are.
