As he was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,[fn] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”

When Jesus came to the leader’s house, he saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.

But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons.”

When the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”

Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.

The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and, “He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons.”

Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus’s feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,

But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”

“As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won’t drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.

One Sabbath, when he went in to eat[fn] at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching him closely.

A ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ”

Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,

The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: “He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One! ”

“and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him.

There was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

“Yet, look, he’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?

“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?

“Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue.

“I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me.[fn]

“and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

“And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders also did.

The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem

Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders:[fn]

“The kings of the earth take their stand

and the rulers assemble together

against the Lord and against his Messiah.

“But the one who was mistreating his neighbor pushed Moses aside, saying: Who appointed you a ruler and a judge over us?

“This Moses, whom they rejected when they said, Who appointed you a ruler and a judge? ​— ​this one God sent as a ruler and a deliverer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

“Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.

When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat and stone them,
