In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters[fn] — the number of people who were together was about a hundred twenty — and said,
“God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death.
“Moses said:[fn] The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you.
“God raised up his servant[fn] and sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your evil ways.”
Then the high priest rose up. He and all who were with him, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered the men[fn] to be taken outside for a little while.
“Some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, and all his followers were dispersed and came to nothing.

“Get up, go downstairs, and go with them with no doubts at all, because I have sent them.”
Peter then invited them in and gave them lodging.
The next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went with him.

The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party got up and argued vehemently, “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him? ”[fn]
“But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.
