“And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread.

“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye?

“But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,

“how he entered the house of God, and they ate[fn] the bread of the Presence ​— ​which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?

“If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

“How can someone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

“Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

“Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread? ”

When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly? ”

“So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes? ’ The man was speechless.

He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit,[fn] calls him ‘Lord’:

“If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how, then, can he be his son? ”

“Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?[fn]

“How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way? ”

“how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence ​— ​which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests ​— ​and also gave some to his companions? ”

So he summoned them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

Then he said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand all of the parables?

And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use to describe it?

Those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and told about the pigs.

“Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied. “Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! ”

The chief priests and the scribes heard it and started looking for a way to kill him. For they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was astonished by his teaching.

“And as for the dead being raised ​— ​haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?

Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums.

It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a cunning way to arrest Jesus and kill him.

And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him money. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him.

Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man? ”[fn]

“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the beam of wood in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter in your brother’s eye.

“Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered.

“What is written in the law? ” he asked him. “How do you read it? ”

“If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

“Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.

“Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.

“But I have a baptism to undergo, and how it consumes me until it is finished!

“Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this present time?

He told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves:

Seeing that he became sad,[fn] Jesus said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!

Then he said to them, “How can they say that the Messiah is the son of David?

“David calls him ‘Lord.’ How, then, can he be his son? ”

The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people.

He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand him over to them.

“How can anyone be born when he is old? ” Nicodemus asked him. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born? ”

“How can these things be? ” asked Nicodemus.

“If I have told you about earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

“How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? ” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with[fn] Samaritans.[fn]

“How can you believe, since you accept glory from one another but don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

“But if you don’t believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words? ”
