They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”[fn]
“For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.”
“Because of this, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’
“so that this generation may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[fn] —
“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place, when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown out.

So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
When the people saw the sign[fn] he had done, they said, “This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
“It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to me —
“You aren’t from Galilee too, are you? ” they replied. “Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
Then the Jews said, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’
“Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do you claim to be? ”
Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes? ”
“He’s a prophet,” he said.

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

When Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you’re reading? ”
