Ἐλύμας, , [Buttmann, 20 (18)], Elymas, an appellative name which Luke interprets as μάγος — derived either, as is commonly supposed, from the Arabic Elymas in Syriac (elymon), i. e. wise; or, according to the more probable opinion of Delitzsch (Zeitschrift f. d. Luth. Theol. 1877, p. 7), from the Aramaic אַלִימָא powerful: Acts 13:8. [BB. DD., under the word.]
