As he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen.
They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.
And he said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.”
While he was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating[fn] with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who were following him.
Since he had healed many, all who had diseases were pressing toward him to touch him.
When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, “He’s out of his mind.”
“For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be brought to light.
“For whoever has, more will be given to him, and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

“If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance.”

For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed[fn] into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later.”
But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.
“Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle in my name who can soon afterward speak evil of me.
“And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ — truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
When Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.
Looking at them, Jesus said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”[fn]
Seeing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, he went to find out if there was anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs.
The chief priests and the scribes heard it and started looking for a way to kill him. For they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was astonished by his teaching.
“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
“But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ ” — they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was truly a prophet.
They were looking for a way to arrest him but feared the crowd because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. So they left him and went away.
