But where can wisdom be found,

and where is understanding located?

Where then does wisdom come from,

and where is understanding located?

Where is the road to the home of light?

Do you know where darkness lives,

I explored with my mind the pull of wine on my body ​— ​my mind still guiding me with wisdom — and how to grasp folly, until I could see what is good for people to do under heaven[fn] during the few days of their lives.

In the morning sow your seed,

and at evening do not let your hand rest,

because you don’t know which will succeed,

whether one or the other,

or if both of them will be equally good.

“Woe to the one who argues with his Maker —

one clay pot among many.[fn]

Does clay say to the one forming it,

‘What are you making? ’

Or does your work say,

‘He has no hands’?[fn]

This is what the LORD says:

Where is your mother’s divorce certificate

that I used to send her away?

Or to which of my creditors did I sell you?

Look, you were sold for your iniquities,

and your mother was sent away

because of your transgressions.

This is what the LORD says:

Heaven is my throne,

and earth is my footstool.

Where could you possibly build a house for me?

And where would my resting place be?

Why should I forgive you?

Your children have abandoned me

and sworn by those who are not gods.

I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery;

they gashed themselves at the[fn] prostitute’s house.

This is what the LORD says:

Stand by the roadways and look.

Ask about the ancient paths,

“Which is the way to what is good? ”

Then take it

and find rest for yourselves.

But they protested, “We won’t! ”

Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from? ”
