“I baptize you with[fn] water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove[fn] his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for[fn] people.”

“And whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Jesus turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns[fn] but human concerns.”

“and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat.

He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.

“Follow me,” Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for[fn] people.”

Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns[fn] but human concerns.”

And Jesus answered him,[fn] “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

and stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.

Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after[fn] me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily,[fn] and follow me.

But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

“Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

“On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back.

“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don’t want this man to rule over us.’

Then he said, “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Don’t follow them.

(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”)

“He is the one coming after me,[fn] whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

“This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’

From that moment[fn] many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him.

Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him! ”

When Jesus told them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.

Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.

The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast.
