“The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

“In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit.

“Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad[fn] and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

“Still other seed fell on good ground and produced fruit: some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown.

“But the one sown on the good ground ​— ​this is one who hears and understands the word, who does produce fruit and yields: some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times what was sown.”

“The landowner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Master, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from? ’

He replied, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man;

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls.

“and when it was full, they dragged it ashore, sat down, and gathered the good fish into containers, but threw out the worthless ones.

He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up[fn] three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

“If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.

Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for me.

“The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”

“Still other seed fell on good ground and it grew up, producing fruit that increased thirty, sixty, and a hundred times.”

“And those like seed sown on good ground hear the word, welcome it, and produce fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundred times what was sown.”

He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” ​— ​

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away ​— ​it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

“And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.[fn]

“And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

“Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you season it? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.

“For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”

As the two men were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” ​— ​not knowing what he was saying.

“Now, salt is good, but if salt should lose its taste, how will it be made salty?

As some were talking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,

and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people are drunk, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me,

Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me? ”

With still more difficulty we sailed along the coast and came to a place called Fair Havens near the city of Lasea.

Now if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good.

For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it.

So I discover this law:[fn] When I want to do what is good,[fn] evil is present with me.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes.

It is a good thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble.[fn]

Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little leaven[fn] leavens the whole batch of dough?
