PSALM 78

God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.

1 Listen ^H238, my people ^H5971, to my [fn]instruction ^H8451;

Incline ^H5186 your ears ^H241 to the words ^H561 of my mouth ^H6310.

2 I will open ^H6605 my mouth ^H6310 in a parable ^H4912;

I will tell ^H5042 riddles ^H2420 of old ^H6924,

3 Which ^H834 we have heard ^H8085 and known ^H3045,

And our fathers ^H1 have told ^H5608 us.

4 We will not conceal ^H3582 them from their children ^H1121,

But we will tell ^H5608 the generation ^H1755 to come ^H314 the praises ^H8416 of the LORD ^H3068,

And His power ^H5807 and His wondrous ^H6381 works ^H6381 that He has done ^H6213.

5 For He established ^H6965 a testimony ^H5715 in Jacob ^H3290,

And appointed ^H7760 a law ^H8451 in Israel ^H3478,

Which ^H834 He commanded ^H6680 our fathers ^H1

That they were to [fn]teach ^H3045 them to their children ^H1121,

6 So ^H4616 that ^H4616 the generation ^H1755 to come ^H314 would know ^H3045, the children ^H1121 yet to be born ^H3205,

That they would arise ^H6965 and tell ^H5608 them to their children ^H1121,

7 So that they would put ^H7760 their confidence ^H3689 in God ^H430

But comply ^H5341 with ^H5341 His commandments ^H4687,

8 And not be like their fathers ^H1,

A stubborn ^H5637 and rebellious ^H4784 generation ^H1755,

And whose spirit ^H7307 was not faithful ^H539 to God ^H410.

9 The sons ^H1121 of Ephraim ^H669 [fn]were archers ^H7411 equipped ^H5401 with bows ^H7198,

Yet they turned ^H2015 back ^H2015 on the day ^H3117 of battle ^H7128.

10 They did not keep ^H8104 the covenant ^H1285 of God ^H430

And refused ^H3985 to walk ^H1980 in His Law ^H8451;

11 They forgot ^H7911 His deeds ^H5949

And His [fn]miracles ^H6381 that He had shown ^H7200 them.

12 He performed ^H6213 wonders ^H6382 before ^H5048 their fathers ^H1

In the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, in the field ^H7704 of Zoan ^H6814.

13 He divided ^H1234 the sea ^H3220 and caused them to pass ^H5674 through ^H5674,

And He made the waters ^H4325 stand ^H5324 up ^H5324 like ^H3644 a heap ^H5067.

14 Then He led ^H5148 them with the cloud ^H6051 by day ^H3119

17 Yet they still ^H5750 continued ^H3254 to sin ^H2398 against Him,

To rebel ^H4784 against the Most ^H5945 High ^H5945 in the desert ^H6723.

18 And in their heart ^H3824 they put ^H5254 God ^H410 to ^H5254 the ^H5254 test ^H5254

By asking ^H7592 for food ^H3978 [fn]that suited their taste ^H5315.

19 Then they spoke ^H1696 against God ^H430;

They said ^H559, “Can ^H3201 God ^H410 prepare ^H6186 a table ^H7979 in the wilderness ^H4057?

20 “Behold ^H2005, He struck ^H5221 the rock ^H6697 so that waters ^H4325 gushed ^H2100 out ^H2100,

And streams ^H5158 were overflowing ^H7857;

Can ^H3201 He also ^H1571 provide ^H5414 bread ^H3899?

Will He prepare ^H3559 meat ^H7607 for His people ^H5971?”

21 Therefore ^H3651 the LORD ^H3068 heard ^H8085 and [fn]was ^H5674 full ^H5674 of ^H5674 wrath ^H5674;

And a fire ^H784 was kindled ^H5400 against Jacob ^H3290,

And anger ^H639 also ^H1571 mounted ^H5927 against Israel ^H3478,

22 Because ^H3588 they did not believe ^H539 in God ^H430

And did not trust ^H982 in His salvation ^H3444.

23 Yet He commanded ^H6680 the clouds ^H7834 above ^H4480 H4605

And opened ^H6605 the doors ^H1817 of heaven ^H8064;

24 He rained ^H4305 down ^H4305 manna ^H4478 upon them to eat ^H398,

And gave ^H5414 them [fn]food ^H1715 from heaven ^H8064.

25 Man ^H376 ate ^H398 the bread ^H3899 of [fn]angels ^H47;

He sent ^H7971 them [fn]food ^H6720 [fn]in abundance ^H7648.

26 He made the east ^H6921 wind ^H6921 blow ^H5265 in the sky ^H8064

And by His [fn]power ^H5797 He directed ^H5090 the south ^H8486 wind ^H8486.

27 When He rained ^H4305 meat ^H7607 upon them like the dust ^H6083,

Even winged ^H3671 fowl ^H5775 like the sand ^H2344 of the seas ^H3220,

28 He let them fall ^H5307 in the midst ^H7130 of [fn]their camp ^H4264,

All ^H5439 around ^H5439 their dwellings ^H4908.

29 So they ate ^H398 and were well ^H3966 filled ^H7646,

And He [fn]satisfied ^H935 their longing ^H8378.

30 [fn]Yet before they had abandoned ^H2114 their longing ^H8378,

While ^H5750 their food ^H400 was in their mouths ^H6310,

31 The anger ^H639 of God ^H430 rose ^H5927 against them

And killed ^H2026 [fn]some of their strongest ^H4924 ones,

And [fn]subdued ^H3766 the choice ^H970 men ^H977 of Israel ^H3478.

32 In spite of all ^H3605 this ^H2088 they still ^H5750 sinned ^H2398

And did not believe ^H539 in His wonderful ^H6381 works ^H6381.

33 So He brought ^H3615 their days ^H3117 to ^H3615 an ^H3615 end ^H3615 in futility ^H1892,

And their years ^H8141 to an end in sudden ^H928 terror ^H928.

34 When ^H518 He killed ^H2026 them, then they sought ^H1875 Him,

And they returned ^H7725 and searched ^H7836 diligently ^H7836 for God ^H410;

35 And they remembered ^H2142 that God ^H430 was their rock ^H6697,

And the Most ^H5945 High ^H5945 God ^H410 their Redeemer ^H1350.

36 But they flattered ^H6601 Him with their mouth ^H6310

And lied ^H3576 to Him with their tongue ^H3956.

37 For their heart ^H3820 was not steadfast ^H3559 toward ^H5973 Him,

Nor ^H3808 were they faithful ^H539 with His covenant ^H1285.

38 But He, being compassionate ^H7349, [fn]forgave ^H3722 their wrongdoing ^H5771 and did not destroy ^H7843 them;

And often ^H7235 He [fn]restrained ^H7725 His anger ^H639

And did not stir ^H5782 up ^H5782 all ^H3605 His wrath ^H2534.

39 So He remembered ^H2142 that they were only flesh ^H1320,

A [fn]wind ^H7307 that passes ^H1980 and does not return ^H7725.

40 How ^H4100 often ^H4100 they rebelled ^H4784 against Him in the wilderness ^H4057

And grieved ^H6087 Him in the desert ^H3452!

41 Again ^H7725 and again they [fn]tempted ^H5254 God ^H410,

And pained ^H8428 the Holy ^H6918 One ^H6918 of Israel ^H3478.

42 They did not remember ^H2142 His [fn]power ^H3027,

The day ^H3117 when ^H834 He redeemed ^H6299 them from the enemy ^H6862,

43 When ^H834 He performed ^H7760 His signs ^H226 in Egypt ^H4714

And His marvels ^H4159 in the field ^H7704 of Zoan ^H6814,

44 And turned ^H2015 their rivers ^H2975 to blood ^H1818,

And their streams ^H5140, so that they could not drink ^H8354.

45 He sent ^H7971 swarms ^H6157 of ^H6157 flies ^H6157 among them that devoured ^H398 them,

And frogs ^H6854 that destroyed ^H7843 them.

46 He also gave ^H5414 their crops ^H2981 to the grasshopper ^H2625

And the product ^H3018 of ^H3018 their labor ^H3018 to the locust ^H697.

47 He [fn]destroyed ^H2026 their vines ^H1612 with hailstones ^H1259

And their sycamore ^H8256 trees ^H8256 with frost ^H2602.

48 He also turned ^H5462 their cattle ^H1165 over ^H5462 to the hailstones ^H1259,

And their herds ^H4735 to bolts ^H7565 of ^H7565 lightning ^H7565.

49 He sent ^H7971 His burning ^H2740 anger ^H639 upon them,

Fury ^H5678 and indignation ^H2195 and trouble ^H6869,

A band ^H4917 of [fn]destroying ^H7451 angels ^H4397.

50 He leveled ^H6424 a path ^H5410 for His anger ^H639;

He did not spare ^H2820 their souls ^H5315 from death ^H4194,

But turned ^H5462 their lives ^H2416 over ^H5462 to the plague ^H1698,

51 And struck ^H5221 all ^H3605 the firstborn ^H1060 in Egypt ^H4714,

The first ^H7225 and ^H7225 best ^H7225 of their vigor ^H202 in the tents ^H168 of Ham ^H2526.

52 But He led ^H5265 His own people ^H5971 out ^H5265 like sheep ^H6629,

And guided ^H5090 them in the wilderness ^H4057 like a flock ^H5739;

53 He led ^H5148 them safely ^H983, so that they did not fear ^H6342;

But the sea ^H3220 engulfed ^H3680 their enemies ^H340.

54 So He brought ^H935 them to His holy ^H6944 [fn]land ^H1366,

To this ^H2088 [fn]hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 which His right ^H3225 hand ^H3225 had gained ^H7069.

55 He also drove ^H1644 out ^H1644 the nations ^H1471 from them

And apportioned ^H5307 them as an inheritance ^H5159 by measurement ^H2256,

And had the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478 dwell ^H7931 in their tents ^H168.

56 Yet they [fn]tempted ^H5254 and rebelled ^H4784 against ^H854 the Most ^H5945 High ^H5945 God ^H430

And did not keep ^H8104 His testimonies ^H5713,

57 But turned ^H5472 back ^H5472 and acted ^H898 treacherously ^H898 like their fathers ^H1;

They turned ^H2015 aside ^H2015 like a treacherous ^H7423 bow ^H7198.

58 For they provoked ^H3707 Him with their high ^H1116 places ^H1116

And moved ^H7065 Him to ^H7065 jealousy ^H7065 with their carved ^H6456 images ^H6456.

59 When God ^H430 heard ^H8085 them, He [fn]was filled ^H5674 with ^H5674 wrath ^H5674

And He utterly ^H3966 rejected ^H3988 Israel ^H3478;

60 So that He abandoned ^H5203 the dwelling ^H4908 place ^H4908 at Shiloh ^H7887,

The tent ^H168 [fn]which He had pitched ^H7931 among people ^H120,

61 And He gave ^H5414 up ^H5414 His strength ^H5797 to captivity ^H7628

And His glory ^H8597 into the hand ^H3027 of the enemy ^H6862.

62 He also turned ^H5462 His people ^H5971 over ^H5462 to the sword ^H2719,

And [fn]was filled ^H5674 with ^H5674 wrath ^H5674 at His inheritance ^H5159.

63 Fire ^H784 devoured ^H398 [fn]His young ^H970 men ^H970,

And [fn]His virgins ^H1330 had ^H1984 no ^H3808 wedding ^H1984 songs ^H1984.

64 [fn]His priests ^H3548 fell ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719,

And [fn]His widows ^H490 could not weep ^H1058.

65 Then the Lord ^H136 awoke ^H3364 as if from sleep ^H3463,

Like a warrior ^H1368 [fn]overcome ^H7442 by wine ^H3196.

66 He [fn]drove ^H5221 His adversaries ^H6862 backward ^H268;

He put ^H5414 on them an everlasting ^H5769 disgrace ^H2781.

67 He also rejected ^H3988 the tent ^H168 of Joseph ^H3130,

And did not choose ^H977 the tribe ^H7626 of Ephraim ^H669,

68 But chose ^H977 the tribe ^H7626 of Judah ^H3063,

Mount ^H2022 Zion ^H6726, which ^H834 He loved ^H157.

69 And He built ^H1129 His sanctuary ^H4720 like ^H3644 the heights ^H7311,

Like the earth ^H776 which He has established ^H3245 forever ^H5769.

70 He also chose ^H977 His servant ^H5650 David ^H1732

And took ^H3947 him from the sheepfolds ^H6629 H4356;

71 From [fn]the care ^H310 of the [fn]ewes ^H5763 with ^H5763 nursing ^H5763 lambs ^H5763 He brought ^H935 him

To shepherd ^H7462 Jacob ^H3290 His people ^H5971,

And Israel ^H3478 His inheritance ^H5159.

72 So he shepherded ^H7462 them according to the integrity ^H8537 of his heart ^H3824,

And guided ^H5148 them with his skillful ^H8394 hands ^H3709.
