Contrast of the Upright and the Wicked

1 One who loves ^H157 [fn]discipline ^H4148 loves ^H157 knowledge ^H1847,

But one who hates ^H8130 rebuke ^H8433 is stupid ^H1198.

2 A good ^H2896 person ^H2896 will obtain ^H6329 favor ^H7522 from the LORD ^H3068,

But He will condemn ^H7561 a person ^H376 [fn]who devises ^H4209 evil ^H4209.

3 A person ^H120 will not be established ^H3559 by wickedness ^H7562,

But the root ^H8328 of the righteous ^H6662 will not be moved ^H4131.

4 An [fn]excellent ^H2428 wife ^H802 is the crown ^H5850 of her husband ^H1167,

But she who shames ^H954 him is like rottenness ^H7538 in his bones ^H6106.

5 The thoughts ^H4284 of the righteous ^H6662 are just ^H4941,

But the counsels ^H8458 of the wicked ^H7563 are deceitful ^H4820.

6 The words ^H1697 of the wicked ^H7563 wait ^H693 in ^H693 ambush ^H693 for blood ^H1818,

But the mouth ^H6310 of the upright ^H3477 will rescue ^H5337 them.

7 The wicked ^H7563 are overthrown ^H2015 and are no ^H369 more,

But the house ^H1004 of the righteous ^H6662 will stand ^H5975.

8 A person ^H376 will be praised ^H1984 according ^H6310 to his insight ^H7922,

But one of perverse ^H5753 [fn]mind ^H3820 will be despised ^H937.

9 Better ^H2896 is one who is lightly ^H7034 esteemed ^H7034 and has a servant ^H5650,

Than ^H4480 one who honors ^H3513 himself and lacks ^H2638 bread ^H3899.

10 A righteous ^H6662 person ^H6662 has ^H3045 regard ^H3045 for the life ^H5315 of his animal ^H929,

But even the compassion ^H7356 of the wicked ^H7563 is cruel ^H394.

11 One who works ^H5647 his land ^H127 will have ^H7646 plenty ^H7646 of bread ^H3899,

But one who pursues ^H7291 worthless ^H7386 things lacks ^H2638 [fn]sense ^H3820.

12 The wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563 desires ^H2530 the [fn]plunder ^H4685 of evil ^H7451 people ^H7451,

But the root ^H8328 of the righteous ^H6662 yields ^H5414 fruit.

13 [fn]An evil ^H7451 person ^H7451 is ensnared ^H4170 by the offense ^H6588 of his lips ^H8193,

But the righteous ^H6662 will escape ^H3318 from trouble ^H6869.

14 A person ^H376 will be ^H7646 satisfied ^H7646 with good ^H2896 by the fruit ^H6529 of his [fn]words ^H6310,

And the deeds ^H1576 of a person’s ^H120 hands ^H3027 will return ^H7725 to him.

15 The way ^H1870 of a fool ^H191 is right ^H3477 in his own eyes ^H5869,

But a person ^H8085 who listens ^H8085 to advice ^H6098 is wise ^H2450.

16 A fool’s ^H191 anger ^H3708 is known ^H3045 at once ^H3117,

But a prudent ^H6175 person ^H6175 conceals ^H3680 dishonor ^H7036.

But the heart ^H3820 of fools ^H3684 proclaims ^H7121 foolishness ^H200.

24 The hand ^H3027 of the diligent ^H2742 will rule ^H4910,

But the [fn]lazy ^H7423 hand will be put to forced ^H4522 labor ^H4522.

25 Anxiety ^H1674 in a person’s ^H376 heart ^H3820 weighs ^H7812 it down ^H7812,

But a good ^H2896 word ^H1697 makes ^H8055 it glad ^H8055.

26 The righteous ^H6662 person ^H6662 is a guide ^H8446 to his neighbor ^H7453,

But the way ^H1870 of the wicked ^H7563 leads ^H8582 them astray ^H8582.

But the precious ^H3368 possession ^H1952 of a person ^H120 is diligence ^H2742.
