The Temptation of Jesus

1 Then ^G5119 Jesus ^G2424 was led ^G321 up ^G321 by the Spirit ^G4151 into the wilderness ^G2048 to be tempted ^G3985 by the devil ^G1228.

2 And after He had fasted ^G3522 for forty ^G5062 days ^G2250 and forty ^G5062 nights ^G3571, He [fn]then ^G5305 became hungry ^G3983. 3 And the tempter ^G3985 came ^G4334 and said ^G3004 to Him, “If ^G1487 You are the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316, command ^G3004 that these ^G3778 stones ^G3037 become ^G1096 bread ^G740.” 4 But He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “It is written ^G1125: ‘MAN ^G444 SHALL NOT LIVE ^G2198 ON BREAD ^G740 ALONE ^G3441, BUT ON EVERY ^G3956 WORD ^G4487 THAT COMES ^G1607 OUT ^G1607 OF ^G1223 THE MOUTH ^G4750 OF GOD ^G2316.’”

5 Then ^G5119 the devil ^G1228 *took ^G3880 Him along ^G3880 into the holy ^G40 city ^G4172 and had Him stand ^G2476 on the pinnacle ^G4419 of the temple ^G2413, 6 and he *said ^G3004 to Him, “If ^G1487 You are the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316, throw ^G906 Yourself ^G4572 down ^G2736; for it is written ^G1125:

‘HE WILL GIVE ^G1781 HIS ANGELS ^G32 ORDERS ^G1781 CONCERNING ^G4012 YOU’;

and

‘ON THEIR HANDS ^G5495 THEY WILL LIFT ^G142 YOU UP,

SO ^G3379 THAT ^G3379 YOU DO NOT ^G3379 STRIKE ^G4350 YOUR FOOT ^G4228 AGAINST ^G4314 A STONE ^G3037.’”

7 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G5346 to him, “[fn]On the other ^G3825 hand ^G3825, it is written ^G1125: ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT ^G1598 THE LORD ^G2962 YOUR GOD ^G2316 TO ^G1598 THE ^G1598 TEST ^G1598.’”

8 Again ^G3825, the devil ^G1228 *took ^G3880 Him along ^G3880 to a very ^G3029 high ^G5308 mountain ^G3735 and *showed ^G1166 Him all ^G3956 the kingdoms ^G932 of the world ^G2889 and their glory ^G1391; 9 and he said ^G3004 to Him, “All ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 I will give ^G1325 You, if ^G1437 You fall ^G4098 down ^G4098 and [fn]worship ^G4352 me.” 10 Then ^G5119 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to him, “Go ^G5217 away ^G5217, Satan ^G4567! For it is written ^G1125: ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP ^G4352 THE LORD ^G2962 YOUR GOD ^G2316, AND [fn]SERVE ^G3000 HIM ONLY ^G3441.’” 11 Then ^G5119 the devil ^G1228 *left ^G863 Him; and behold ^G2400, angels ^G32 came ^G4334 and began to serve ^G1247 Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now ^G1161 when Jesus heard ^G191 that John ^G2491 had been taken ^G3860 into ^G3860 custody ^G3860, He withdrew ^G402 into Galilee ^G1056;

15 “THE LAND ^G1093 OF ZEBULUN ^G2194 AND THE LAND ^G1093 OF NAPHTALI ^G3508,

[fn]BY THE WAY ^G3598 OF THE SEA ^G2281, ON THE OTHER ^G4008 SIDE ^G4008 OF THE JORDAN ^G2446, GALILEE ^G1056 OF THE [fn]GENTILES ^G1484—

16 THE PEOPLE ^G2992 WHO WERE SITTING ^G2521 IN DARKNESS ^G4653 SAW ^G3708 A GREAT ^G3173 LIGHT ^G5457,

AND THOSE ^G3588 WHO WERE SITTING ^G2521 IN THE LAND ^G5561 AND SHADOW ^G4639 OF DEATH ^G2288,

UPON THEM A LIGHT ^G5457 DAWNED ^G393.”

17 From that time ^G5119 Jesus ^G2424 began ^G757 to [fn]preach ^G2784 and say ^G3004, “Repent ^G3340, for the kingdom ^G932 of heaven ^G3772 has ^G1448 come ^G1448 near ^G1448.”

The First Disciples

Ministry in Galilee

24 And the news ^G189 about Him spread ^G565 throughout ^G1519 G3650 Syria ^G4947; and they brought ^G4374 to Him all ^G3956 who were ill ^G2192 G2560, those suffering ^G4912 with various ^G4164 diseases ^G3554 and severe ^G931 pain ^G931, demon-possessed ^G1139, people ^G4583 with ^G4583 epilepsy ^G4583, and people ^G3885 who were paralyzed ^G3885; and He healed ^G2323 them.

25 Large ^G4183 crowds ^G3793 followed ^G190 Him from Galilee ^G1056 and the Decapolis ^G1179, and Jerusalem ^G2414, and Judea ^G2449, and from beyond ^G4008 the Jordan ^G2446.
