John’s Questions
1 When G3753 Jesus G2424 had finished G5055 [fn]giving G1299 instructions G1299 to His twelve G1427 disciples G3101, He went G3327 on G3327 from G1564 there G1564 to teach G1321 and [fn]preach G2784 in their cities G4172.
2 Now G1161 while in prison G1201, John G2491 heard G191 about the works G2041 of Christ G5547, and he sent G3992 word by his disciples G3101,
3 and said G3004 to Him, “Are You the Coming G2064 One, or G2228 are we to [fn]look G4328 for G4328 someone G2087 else G2087?” 4 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G3004 to them, “Go G4198 and report G518 to John G2491 what G3739 you hear G191 and see G991: 5 those who are BLIND G5185 RECEIVE G308 SIGHT G308 and those who limp G5560 walk G4043, those with G3015 leprosy G3015 are cleansed G2511 and those who are deaf G2974 hear G191, the dead G3498 are raised G1453, and the POOR G4434 HAVE THE [fn]GOSPEL G2097 PREACHED G2097 TO THEM. 6 And blessed G3107 is [fn]any G1437 person who G3739 does not [fn]take G4624 offense G4624 at Me.”
Jesus’ Tribute to John
7 As these G3778 disciples of John were going G4198 away, Jesus G2424 began G757 speaking G3004 to the crowds G3793 about G4012 John G2491: “What G5101 did you go G1831 out G1831 into the wilderness G2048 to see G2300? A reed G2563 shaken G4531 by the wind G417?
8 [fn]But what G5101 did you go G1831 out G1831 to see G3708? A man G444 dressed G294 in soft G3120 clothing? Those G3588 who wear G5409 soft G3120 clothing are in kings’ G935 [fn]palaces G3624! 9 [fn]But what G5101 did you go G1831 out G1831 to see G3708? A prophet G4396? Yes G3483, I tell G3004 you, and one who is more G4053 than a prophet G4396. 10 This G3778 is the one about G4012 whom G3739 it [fn]is written G1125:
‘BEHOLD G2400, I AM SENDING G649 MY MESSENGER G32 [fn]AHEAD G4253 OF YOU,
WHO G3739 WILL PREPARE G2680 YOUR WAY G3598 BEFORE G1715 YOU.’
11 Truly G281 I say G3004 to you, among G1722 those born G1084 of women G1135 there has not arisen G1453 anyone greater G3173 than John G2491 the Baptist G910! Yet G1161 the one who is least G3398 in the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is greater G3173 than he. 12 And from the days G2250 of John G2491 the Baptist G910 until G2193 now G737 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 has been treated G971 violently G971, and violent G973 men G973 take G726 it by G726 force G726. 13 For all G3956 the Prophets G4396 and the Law G3551 prophesied G4395 until G2193 John G2491. 14 And if G1487 you are willing G2309 to accept G1209 it, John himself G846 is Elijah G2243 who [fn]was to come G2064. 15 The one who has G2192 ears G3775 to hear G191, [fn]let him hear G191.
16 “But to what G5101 shall I compare G3666 this G3778 generation G1074? It is like G3664 children G3813 sitting G2521 in the marketplaces G58, who G3739 call G4377 out G4377 to the other G2087 children, 17 and say G3004, ‘We played G832 the G832 flute G832 for you, and you did not dance G3738; we sang G2354 a G2354 song G2354 of G2354 mourning G2354, and you did not [fn]mourn G2875.’ 18 For John G2491 came G2064 neither G3383 eating G2068 nor G3383 drinking G4095, and they say G3004, ‘He has G2192 a demon G1140!’ 19 The Son G5207 of Man G444 came G2064 eating G2068 and drinking G4095, and they say G3004, ‘Behold G2400, a gluttonous G5314 man G444 and a [fn]heavy G3630 drinker G3630, a friend G5384 of tax G5057 collectors G5057 and [fn]sinners G268!’ And yet wisdom G4678 is vindicated G1344 by her deeds G2041.”
The Unrepenting Cities
20 Then G5119 He began G757 to reprimand G3679 the cities G4172 in which G3739 most G4183 of His [fn]miracles G1411 were done G1096, because G3754 they did not repent G3340.
21 “Woe G3759 to you, Chorazin G5523! Woe G3759 to you, Bethsaida G966! For if G1487 the [fn]miracles G1411 that occurred G1096 in you had occurred G1096 in Tyre G5184 and Sidon G4605, they would have repented G3340 long G3819 ago G3819 in [fn]sackcloth G4526 and ashes G4700. 22 Nevertheless G4133 I say G3004 to you, it will be more G414 tolerable G414 for Tyre G5184 and Sidon G4605 on the day G2250 of judgment G2920 than G2228 for you. 23 And you, Capernaum G2584, will not be exalted G5312 to heaven G3772, will you? You will be brought G2597 down G2597 to Hades G86! For if G1487 the [fn]miracles G1411 that occurred G1096 in you had occurred G1096 in Sodom G4670, it would have remained G3306 to this G4594 day G4594. 24 Nevertheless G4133 I say G3004 to you that it will be more G414 tolerable G414 for the land G1093 of Sodom G4670 on the day G2250 of judgment G2920, than G2228 for you.”
Come to Me
25 [fn]At that time G2540 Jesus G2424 said G3004, “I praise G1843 You, Father G3962, Lord G2962 of heaven G3772 and earth G1093, that You have hidden G2928 these G3778 things G3778 from the wise G4680 and intelligent G4908, and have revealed G601 them to infants G3516.
26 Yes G3483, Father G3962, for this G3779 way G3779 was well G2107 pleasing G2107 in Your sight G1715. 27 All G3956 things G3956 have been handed G3860 over G3860 to Me by My Father G3962; and no G3762 one G3762 knows G1921 the Son G5207 except G1508 the Father G3962; nor G3761 does anyone G5100 know G1921 the Father G3962 except G1508 the Son G5207, and anyone to whom G3739 the Son G5207 determines G1014 to reveal G601 Him.
28 “Come G1205 to Me, all G3956 [fn]who are weary G2872 and burdened G5412, and I will give G373 you rest G373. 29 Take G142 My yoke G2218 upon you and learn G3129 from Me, for I am G1510 gentle G4239 and humble G5011 in heart G2588, and YOU WILL FIND G2147 [fn]REST G372 FOR YOUR SOULS G5590. 30 For My yoke G2218 is comfortable G5543, and My burden G5413 is light G1645.”
