The Twelve Disciples; Instructions for Service

1 Jesus summoned ^G4341 His twelve ^G1427 disciples ^G3101 and gave ^G1325 them authority ^G1849 over unclean ^G169 spirits ^G4151, to cast ^G1544 them out ^G1544, and to heal ^G2323 every ^G3956 disease ^G3554 and every ^G3956 sickness ^G3119.

2 Now ^G1161 the names ^G3686 of the twelve ^G1427 apostles ^G652 are these ^G3778: The first ^G4413, Simon ^G4613, who is called ^G3004 Peter ^G4074, and his brother ^G80 Andrew ^G406; and [fn]James ^G2385 the son of Zebedee ^G2199, and his brother ^G80 [fn]John ^G2491;

3 Philip ^G5376 and [fn]Bartholomew ^G918; Thomas ^G2381 and Matthew ^G3156 the tax ^G5057 collector ^G5057; [fn]James ^G2385 the son of Alphaeus ^G256, and Thaddaeus ^G2280; 4 Simon ^G4613 the [fn]Zealot ^G2581, and Judas ^G2455 Iscariot ^G2469, the one who also ^G2532 betrayed ^G3860 Him.

5 These ^G3778 twelve ^G1427 Jesus ^G2424 sent ^G649 out ^G649 after instructing ^G3853 them, saying ^G3004, “Do not go ^G565 on a road ^G3598 [fn]to Gentiles ^G1484, and do not enter ^G1525 a city ^G4172 of Samaritans ^G4541; 6 but rather ^G3123 go ^G4198 to the lost ^G622 sheep ^G4263 of the house ^G3624 of Israel ^G2474. 7 And as you go ^G4198, [fn]preach ^G2784, saying ^G3004, ‘The kingdom ^G932 of heaven ^G3772 has come ^G1448 near ^G1448.’ 8 Heal ^G2323 the sick ^G770, raise ^G1453 the dead ^G3498, cleanse ^G2511 those ^G3015 with ^G3015 leprosy ^G3015, cast ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140. Freely ^G1432 you received ^G2983, freely ^G1432 give ^G1325. 9 Do not acquire ^G2932 gold ^G5557, or ^G3366 silver ^G696, or ^G3366 copper ^G5475 for your money ^G2223 belts ^G2223, 10 or ^G3361 a [fn]bag ^G4082 for your journey ^G3598, or ^G3366 even ^G3366 two ^G1417 [fn]tunics ^G5509, or ^G3366 sandals ^G5266, or ^G3366 a staff ^G4464; for the worker ^G2040 is deserving ^G514 of his [fn]support ^G5160. 11 And whatever ^G3739 G302 city ^G4172 or ^G2228 village ^G2968 you enter ^G1525, inquire ^G1833 who ^G5101 is worthy ^G514 in it, and stay ^G3306 [fn]at ^G2546 his house ^G2546 until ^G2193 you leave ^G1831 that city. 12 As you enter ^G1525 the [fn]house ^G3614, give ^G782 it your [fn]greeting ^G782. 13 If ^G1437 the house ^G3614 is worthy ^G514, see that your blessing of peace ^G1515 comes ^G2064 upon it. But if ^G1437 it is not worthy ^G514, [fn]take ^G1994 back ^G1994 your blessing of peace ^G1515. 14 And whoever ^G3739 does not receive ^G1209 you nor ^G3366 listen ^G191 to your words ^G3056, as you leave ^G1831 that house ^G3614 or ^G2228 city ^G4172, shake ^G1621 the dust ^G2868 off ^G1621 your feet ^G4228. 15 Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, it will be more ^G414 tolerable ^G414 for the land ^G1093 of Sodom ^G4670 and Gomorrah ^G1116 on the day ^G2250 of judgment ^G2920, than ^G2228 for that city ^G4172.

A Hard Road Ahead of Them

16 “Behold ^G2400, I am sending ^G649 you out ^G649 as sheep ^G4263 in ^G649 the midst ^G3319 of wolves ^G3074; so ^G3767 be as wary ^G5429 as serpents ^G3789, and as innocent ^G185 as doves ^G4058.

17 But be ^G4337 on ^G4337 guard ^G4337 against ^G4337 G575 people ^G444, for they will hand ^G3860 you over ^G3860 to the courts ^G4892 and flog ^G3146 you in their synagogues ^G4864; 18 and you will even ^G2532 be brought ^G71 before ^G1909 governors ^G2232 and kings ^G935 on My account ^G6025, as a testimony ^G3142 to them and to the Gentiles ^G1484. 19 But when ^G3752 they hand ^G3860 you over ^G3860, do not worry ^G3309 about ^G3309 how ^G4459 or ^G2228 what ^G5101 you are to say ^G2980; for what ^G5101 you are to say ^G2980 will be given ^G1325 you in that hour ^G5610. 20 For it is not you who are speaking ^G2980, but it is the Spirit ^G4151 of your Father ^G3962 who is speaking ^G2980 [fn]in you.

21 “Now ^G1161 brother ^G80 will betray ^G3860 brother ^G80 to death ^G2288, and a father ^G3962 his child ^G5043; and children ^G5043 will rise ^G1881 up ^G1881 against ^G1909 parents ^G1118 and [fn]cause ^G2289 them to ^G2289 be ^G2289 put ^G2289 to ^G2289 death ^G2289. 22 And you will be hated ^G3404 by all ^G3956 because ^G1223 of My name ^G3686, but it is the one who has endured ^G5278 to the end ^G5056 who ^G3778 will be saved ^G4982.

23 “But whenever ^G3752 they persecute ^G1377 you in [fn]one ^G3778 city ^G4172, flee ^G5343 to the [fn]next ^G2087; for truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, you will not finish ^G5055 going through the cities ^G4172 of Israel ^G2474 until ^G2193 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 comes ^G2064.

The Meaning of Discipleship

24 “A [fn]disciple ^G3101 is not above ^G5228 his teacher ^G1320, nor ^G3761 a slave ^G1401 above ^G5228 his master ^G2962.

25 It is enough ^G713 for the disciple ^G3101 that he may become ^G1096 like ^G5613 his teacher ^G1320, and the slave ^G1401 like ^G5613 his master ^G2962. If ^G1487 they have called ^G1941 the head ^G3617 of ^G3617 the ^G3617 house ^G3617 [fn]Beelzebul ^G954, how ^G4214 much ^G4214 more ^G3123 will they insult the members ^G3615 of ^G3615 his household ^G3615!

26 “So ^G3767 do not fear ^G5399 them, for there is nothing ^G3762 concealed ^G2572 that will not be revealed ^G601, or ^G2532 hidden ^G2927 that will not be known ^G1097. 27 What ^G3739 I tell ^G3004 you in the darkness ^G4653, tell ^G3004 in the light ^G5457; and what ^G3739 you hear ^G191 whispered in your ear ^G3775, proclaim ^G2784 on the housetops ^G1430 G1909. 28 And do not be ^G5399 afraid ^G5399 of those ^G3588 who kill ^G615 the body ^G4983 but are unable ^G3361 G1410 to kill ^G615 the soul ^G5590; but rather ^G3123 fear ^G5399 Him who is able ^G1410 to destroy ^G622 both ^G2532 soul ^G5590 and body ^G4983 in [fn]hell ^G1067. 29 Are two ^G1417 sparrows ^G4765 not sold ^G4453 for an [fn]assarion ^G787? And yet not one ^G1520 of them will fall ^G4098 to the ground ^G1093 apart ^G427 from your Father ^G3962. 30 But even ^G2532 the hairs ^G2359 of your head ^G2776 are all ^G3956 counted ^G705. 31 So ^G3767 do not fear ^G5399; you are more ^G1308 valuable ^G1308 than a great ^G4183 number ^G4183 of sparrows ^G4765.

32 “Therefore ^G3767, everyone ^G3956 who ^G3748 [fn]confesses ^G3670 Me before ^G1715 people ^G444, I will also ^G2532 confess ^G3670 [fn]him before ^G1715 My Father ^G3962 who is in heaven ^G3772. 33 But whoever ^G3748 G302 denies ^G720 Me before ^G1715 people ^G444, I will also ^G2532 deny ^G720 him before ^G1715 My Father ^G3962 who is in heaven ^G3772.

34 “Do not think ^G3543 that I came ^G2064 to [fn]bring ^G906 peace ^G1515 on the earth ^G1093; I did not come ^G2064 to [fn]bring ^G906 peace ^G1515, but a sword ^G3162. 35 For I came ^G2064 to TURN ^G1369 A MAN ^G444 AGAINST ^G2596 HIS FATHER ^G3962, AND A DAUGHTER ^G2364 AGAINST ^G2596 HER MOTHER ^G3384, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW ^G3565 AGAINST ^G2596 HER MOTHER-IN-LAW ^G3994; 36 and A PERSON’S ^G444 ENEMIES ^G2190 WILL BE THE MEMBERS ^G3615 OF HIS HOUSEHOLD ^G3615.

37 “The one who loves ^G5368 father ^G3962 or ^G2228 mother ^G3384 more ^G5228 than ^G5228 Me is not worthy ^G514 of Me; and the one who loves ^G5368 son ^G5207 or ^G2228 daughter ^G2364 more ^G5228 than ^G5228 Me is not worthy ^G514 of Me. 38 And the one who ^G3739 does not take ^G2983 his cross ^G4716 and follow ^G190 after ^G3694 Me is not worthy ^G514 of Me. 39 The one who has found ^G2147 his [fn]life ^G5590 will lose ^G622 it, and the one who has lost ^G622 his [fn]life ^G5590 on My account ^G6025 will find ^G2147 it.

The Reward for Service

40 “The one who [fn]receives ^G1209 you [fn]receives ^G1209 Me, and the one who [fn]receives ^G1209 Me [fn]receives ^G1209 Him who sent ^G649 Me.

41 The one who [fn]receives ^G1209 a prophet ^G4396 in the name ^G3686 of a prophet ^G4396 shall receive ^G2983 a prophet’s ^G4396 reward ^G3408; and the one who [fn]receives ^G1209 a righteous ^G1342 person ^G1342 in the name ^G3686 of a righteous ^G1342 person ^G1342 shall receive ^G2983 a righteous ^G1342 person’s ^G1342 reward ^G3408. 42 And whoever ^G3739 G1437 gives ^G4222 one ^G1520 of these ^G3778 [fn]little ^G3398 ones ^G3398 just ^G3441 a cup ^G4221 of cold ^G5593 water to ^G4222 drink ^G4222 in the name ^G3686 of a disciple ^G3101, truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, he shall by no ^G3364 means ^G3364 lose ^G622 his reward ^G3408.”
