Teaching at Nazareth
1 Jesus went G1831 out G1831 from G1564 there G1564 and *came G2064 into [fn]His hometown G3968; and His disciples G3101 *followed G190 Him.
2 And when the Sabbath G4521 came G1096, He began G757 to teach G1321 in the synagogue G4864; and [fn]the many G4183 listeners G191 were astonished G1605, saying G3004, “Where G4159 did this G3778 Man G3778 learn these G3778 things G3778, and what G5101 is this wisdom G4678 that has been given G1325 to Him, and such G5108 [fn]miracles G1411 as G5108 these G5108 performed G1096 by His hands G5495? 3 Is this G3778 not the carpenter G5045, the son G5207 of Mary G3137 and brother G80 of [fn]James G2385, Joses G2500, Judas G2455, and Simon G4613? And are His sisters G79 not here G5602 with us?” And they took G4624 offense G4624 at Him. 4 Jesus G2424 said G3004 to them, “A prophet G4396 is not dishonored G820 except G1508 in [fn]his hometown G3968 and among G1722 his own relatives G4773, and in his own household G3614.” 5 And He could G1410 not do G4160 any G3762 [fn]miracle G1411 there G1563 except G1508 that He laid G2007 His hands G5495 on G2007 a few G3641 sick G732 people G732 and healed G2323 them. 6 And He was G2296 amazed G2296 at their unbelief G570.
And He was going G4013 around G4013 G2945 the villages G2968, teaching G1321.
The Twelve Sent Out
7 And He *summoned G4341 the twelve G1427 and began G757 to send G649 them out G649 in G649 pairs G1417, and gave G1325 them authority G1849 over the unclean G169 spirits G4151;
8 and He instructed G3853 them that they were to take G142 nothing G3367 for their journey G3598, except G1508 a mere G3441 staff G4464—no G3361 bread G740, no G3361 [fn]bag G4082, no G3361 money G5475 in their belt G2223— 9 but [fn]to wear G5265 sandals G4547; and He added, “Do not wear G1746 two G1417 [fn]tunics G5509.” 10 And He said G3004 to them, “Wherever G3699 G1437 you enter G1525 a house G3614, stay G3306 there G1563 until G2193 you [fn]leave G1831 town G1564. 11 Any G3739 place G5117 that does not receive G1209 you or G3366 listen G191 to you, as you go G1607 out G1607 from G1564 there G1564, shake G1621 the dust G5522 [fn]off G1621 the soles G5270 of your feet G4228 as a testimony G3142 against them.” 12 And they went G1831 out G1831 and [fn]preached G2784 that people are to repent G3340. 13 And they were casting G1544 out G1544 many G4183 demons G1140 and were anointing G218 with oil G1637 many G4183 sick G732 people G732 and healing G2323 them.
John’s Fate Recalled
14 And King G935 Herod G2264 heard G191 about it, for His name G3686 had become G1096 well G5318 known G5318; and people were saying G3004, “John G2491 the Baptist G907 has risen G1453 from the dead G3498, and that is why G1223 these G3588 miraculous G1411 powers G1411 are at work G1754 in Him.”
15 But others G243 were saying G3004, “He is Elijah G2243.” And others G243 were saying G3004, “He is a prophet G4396, like G5613 one G1520 of the prophets G4396 of old.” 16 But when Herod G2264 heard G191 about it, he kept saying G3004, “John G2491, whom G3739 I beheaded G607, has risen G1453!”
17 For Herod G2264 himself G846 had sent G649 men and had John G2491 arrested G2902 and bound G1210 in prison G5438 on account G1223 of Herodias G2266, the wife G1135 of his brother G80 Philip G5376, because G3754 he had married G1060 her. 18 For John G2491 had been saying G3004 to Herod G2264, “It is not lawful G1832 for you to have G2192 your brother’s G80 wife G1135.” 19 And Herodias G2266 held G1758 a G1758 grudge G1758 against G1758 him and wanted G2309 to put G615 him to G615 death G615, and could G1410 not do so; 20 for Herod G2264 was G5399 afraid G5399 of John G2491, knowing G6063 that he was a righteous G1342 and holy G40 man G435, and he had been protecting G4933 him. And when he heard G191 him, he was very G4183 perplexed G639; and yet he [fn]used to enjoy G2234 listening G191 to him. 21 An opportune G2121 day G2250 came G1096 when G3753 Herod G2264, on his birthday G1077, held G4160 a banquet G1173 for his nobles G3175 and military G5506 commanders G5506, and the leading G4413 people G4413 of Galilee G1056; 22 and when the daughter G2364 of Herodias G2266 herself G846 came G1525 in G1525 and danced G3738, she pleased G700 Herod G2264 and [fn]his dinner G4873 guests G4873; and the king G935 said G3004 to the girl G2877, “Ask G154 me for whatever G3739 G1437 you want G2309, and I will give G1325 it to you.” 23 And he swore G3660 to her, “Whatever G3739 G1437 you ask G154 of me, I will give G1325 it to you, up to half G2255 of my kingdom G932.” 24 And she went G1831 out G1831 and said G3004 to her mother G3384, “What G5101 shall I ask G154 for?” And she said G3004, “The head G2776 of John G2491 the Baptist G907.” 25 Immediately G2117 she came G1525 in G1525 a hurry G4710 to the king G935 and asked G154, saying G3004, “I want G2309 you to give G1325 me at once G1824 the head G2776 of John G2491 the Baptist G910 on a platter G4094.” 26 And although the king G935 was very G4036 sorry G4036, because G1223 of his oaths G3727 and [fn]his dinner G345 guests G345, he was unwilling G3756 G2309 to refuse G114 her. 27 Immediately G2117 the king G935 sent G649 an executioner G4688 and commanded G2004 him to bring G5342 back his head G2776. And he went G565 and beheaded G607 him in the prison G5438, 28 and brought G5342 his head G2776 on a platter G4094, and gave G1325 it to the girl G2877; and the girl G2877 gave G1325 it to her mother G3384. 29 When his disciples G3101 heard G191 about this, they came G2064 and carried G142 away G142 his body G4430, and laid G5087 it in a tomb G3419.
30 The apostles G652 *gathered G4863 together G4863 with Jesus G2424; and they reported G518 to Him all G3956 that they had done G4160 and taught G1321. 31 And He *said G3004 to them, “Come G1205 away by yourselves G4771 G846 to a secluded G2048 place G5117 and rest G373 a little G3641 while G3641.” (For there were many G4183 people coming G2064 and going G5217, and they did not even G3761 have G2119 time G2119 to eat G2068.) 32 And they went G565 away G565 in the boat G4143 to a secluded G2048 place G5117 by themselves G2398.
Five Thousand Men Fed
33 The people saw G3708 them going G5217, and many G4183 recognized G1921 them and ran G4936 there G1563 together G4936 on foot G3979 from all G3956 the cities G4172, and got G4281 there G4281 ahead G4281 of them. 34 When Jesus went G1831 [fn]ashore G1831, He saw G3708 a large G4183 crowd G3793, and He felt G4697 compassion G4697 for them because G3754 they were like G5613 sheep G4263 without G3361 G2192 a shepherd G4166; and He began G757 to teach G1321 them many G4183 things G4183. 35 And when it was already G2235 late G4183 G5610, His disciples G3101 came G4334 up G4334 to Him and said G3004, “[fn]This G3588 place G5117 is secluded G2048 and it is already G2235 late G5610 G4183; 36 send G630 them away G630 so G2443 that G2443 they may go G565 into the surrounding G2945 countryside G68 and villages G2968 and buy G59 themselves G1438 [fn]something G5101 to eat G2068.” 37 But He answered G611 them, “You give G1325 them something to eat G2068!” And they *said G3004 to Him, “Shall we go G565 and spend G59 two G1250 hundred G1250 [fn]denarii G1220 on bread G740, and give G1325 it to them to eat G2068?” 38 But He *said G3004 to them, “How G4214 many G4214 loaves G740 do you have G2192? Go G5217 look G3708!” And when they found G1097 out G1097, they *said G3004, “Five G4002, and two G1417 fish G2486.” 39 And He ordered G2004 them all G3956 to recline G347 by groups G4849 on the green G5515 grass G5528. 40 They reclined G377 in groups G4237 of hundreds G1540 and fifties G4004. 41 And He took G2983 the five G4002 loaves G740 and the two G1417 fish G2486, and looking G308 up G308 toward G1519 heaven G3772, He blessed G2127 the food and broke G2622 the loaves G740 and He gave G1325 them to the disciples G3101 again and again to set G3908 before G3908 them; and He divided G3307 the two G1417 fish G2486 among them all G3956. 42 And they all G3956 ate G2068 and were satisfied G5526; 43 and they picked G142 up G142 twelve G1427 full G4138 baskets G2894 of the broken G2801 pieces G2801 of bread, and of the fish G2486. 44 There were five G4000 thousand G4000 [fn]men G435 who ate G2068 the loaves G740.
Jesus Walks on the Water
45 And immediately G2117 Jesus had G315 His disciples G3101 get G1684 into the boat G4143 and go G4254 ahead G4254 of Him to the other G4008 side G4008, to Bethsaida G966, while G2193 He Himself G846 *dismissed G630 the crowd G3793.
46 And after saying G657 goodbye G657 to them, He left G565 for the mountain G3735 to pray G4336.
47 When it was evening G3798, the boat G4143 was in the middle G3319 of the sea G2281, and He was alone G3441 on the land G1093. 48 Seeing G3708 them [fn]straining G928 at the oars G1643—for the wind G417 was against G1727 them—at about G4012 the [fn]fourth G5067 watch G5438 of the night G3571, He *came G2064 to them, walking G4043 on the sea G2281; and He intended G2309 to pass G3928 by them. 49 But when they saw G3708 Him walking G4043 on the sea G2281, they thought G1380 that it was a ghost G5326, and they cried G349 out G349; 50 for they all G3956 saw G3708 Him and were [fn]terrified G5015. But immediately G2117 He spoke G2980 with them and *said G3004 to them, “Take G2293 courage G2293; it is I, do not be G5399 afraid G5399.” 51 Then G2532 He got G305 into the boat G4143 with them, and the wind G417 stopped G2869; and they were utterly G3029 G1537 G4053 astonished G1839, 52 for they [fn]had not gained G4920 any insight G4920 from the incident of the loaves G740, but [fn]their hearts G2588 were hardened G4456.
Healing at Gennesaret
53 When they had crossed G1276 over G1276 they came G2064 to land G1093 at Gennesaret G1082, and moored G4358 at the shore.
54 And when they got G1831 out G1831 of the boat G4143, immediately G2117 the people recognized G1921 Him, 55 and ran G4063 about G4063 that entire G3650 country G5561 and began G757 carrying G4064 here G4064 and G4064 there G4064 on their pallets G2895 those G3588 who were sick G2560, [fn]to wherever G3699 they heard G191 He was. 56 And wherever G3699 He entered G1531 villages G2968, or G2228 cities G4172, or G2228 a countryside G68, they were laying G5087 the sick G770 in the marketplaces G58 and imploring G3870 Him that they might just G2579 touch G681 the fringe G2899 of His cloak G2440; and all G3745 who G3745 touched G681 it were being [fn]healed G4982.
