Death Plot and Anointing

1 Now ^G1161 the Passover ^G3957 and Festival of Unleavened ^G106 Bread ^G106 were two ^G1417 days ^G2250 away ^G3326; and the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the scribes ^G1122 were seeking ^G2212 how ^G4459 to arrest ^G2902 Him covertly ^G1388 and kill ^G615 Him;

2 for they were saying ^G3004, “Not during ^G1722 the festival ^G1859, otherwise ^G3379 there will be a riot ^G2351 of the people ^G2992.”

3 While He was in Bethany ^G963 at the home ^G3614 of Simon ^G4613 [fn]the Leper ^G3015, He was reclining ^G2621 at the table, and a woman ^G1135 came ^G2064 with an alabaster ^G211 vial ^G211 of very ^G4185 expensive ^G4185 perfume ^G3464 of pure ^G4101 [fn]nard ^G3487. She broke ^G4937 the vial ^G211 and poured ^G2708 the perfume over ^G2708 His head ^G2776. 4 But there were some ^G5100 indignantly ^G23 remarking to one ^G1438 another ^G1438, “Why ^G1519 G5101 has this ^G3778 perfume ^G3464 been ^G1096 wasted ^G684? 5 For this ^G3778 perfume ^G3464 could ^G1410 have been sold ^G4097 for over ^G1883 three ^G5145 hundred ^G5145 [fn]denarii ^G1220, and the money given ^G1325 to the poor ^G4434.” And they were scolding ^G1690 her. 6 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “Leave ^G863 her alone ^G863! The Last Passover

The Lord’s Supper

22 While they were eating ^G2068, He took ^G2983 some bread ^G740, and [fn]after a blessing ^G2127 He broke ^G2806 it, and gave ^G1325 it to them, and said ^G3004, “Take ^G2983 it; this ^G3778 is My body ^G4983.”

23 And when He had taken ^G2983 a cup ^G4221 and given ^G2168 thanks ^G2168, He gave ^G1325 it to them, and they all ^G3956 drank ^G4095 from it. 24 And He said ^G3004 to them, “This ^G3778 is My blood ^G129 of the covenant ^G1242, which ^G3588 is being poured ^G1632 out ^G1632 for many ^G4183. 25 Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, I will not drink ^G4095 of the fruit ^G6013 of the vine ^G288 again ^G3765, until ^G2193 that day ^G2250 when ^G3752 I drink ^G4095 it, new ^G2537, in the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.”

Jesus in Gethsemane

32 They *came ^G2064 to a place ^G5564 named ^G3686 [fn]Gethsemane ^G1068; and He *said ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, “Sit ^G2523 here ^G5602 until ^G2193 I have prayed ^G4336.”

33 And He *took ^G3880 with Him Peter ^G4074, [fn]James ^G2385, and John ^G2491, and began ^G757 to be very ^G1568 distressed ^G1568 and troubled ^G85. 34 And He *said ^G3004 to them, “My soul ^G5590 is deeply ^G4036 grieved ^G4036, to ^G2193 the ^G2193 point ^G2193 of death ^G2288; remain ^G3306 here ^G5602 and [fn]keep ^G1127 watch ^G1127.” 35 And He went ^G4281 a little ^G3398 beyond ^G4281 them, and fell ^G4098 to the ground ^G1093 and began praying ^G4336 that if ^G1487 it were possible ^G1415, the hour ^G5610 might [fn]pass ^G3928 Him by. 36 And He was saying ^G3004, “Abba ^G5! Could ^G2480 you not [fn]keep ^G1127 watch ^G1127 for one ^G1520 hour ^G5610? 38 [fn]Keep ^G1127 watching ^G1127 and praying ^G4336, so ^G2443 that ^G2443 you will not come ^G2064 into temptation ^G3986; the spirit ^G4151 is willing ^G4289, but the flesh ^G4561 is weak ^G772.” 39 And again ^G3825 He went ^G565 away ^G565 and prayed ^G4336, saying ^G3004 the same ^G846 [fn]words ^G3056. 40 And again ^G3825 He came ^G2064 and found ^G2147 them sleeping ^G2518, for their eyes ^G3788 were heavy ^G6046; and they did not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 to say ^G611 in ^G611 reply ^G611 to Him. 41 And He *came ^G2064 the third ^G5154 time ^G5154, and *said ^G3004 to them, “Are you still ^G3062 sleeping ^G2518 and resting ^G373? That is enough ^G568. The hour ^G5610 has come ^G2064; behold ^G2400, the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is being [fn]betrayed ^G3860 into the hands ^G5495 of sinners ^G268. 42 Get ^G1453 up ^G1453, let’s go ^G71; behold ^G2400, the one who is betraying ^G3860 Me is near ^G1448!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 And immediately ^G2117, while He was still ^G2089 speaking ^G2980, Judas ^G2455, one ^G1520 of the twelve ^G1427, *came ^G3854 up, [fn]accompanied ^G3326 G846 by a crowd ^G3793 with swords ^G3162 and clubs ^G3586 who were from the chief ^G749 priests ^G749, the scribes ^G1122, and the elders ^G4245.

44 Now ^G1161 he who was betraying ^G3860 Him had given ^G1325 them a signal ^G4953, saying ^G3004, “Whomever ^G3739 G302 I kiss ^G5368, He is the one; arrest ^G2902 Him and lead ^G520 Him away ^G520 [fn]under ^G806 guard ^G806.” 45 And after coming ^G2064, Judas immediately ^G2117 went ^G4334 to Him and *said ^G3004, “Rabbi ^G4461!” and kissed ^G2705 Him. 46 And they laid ^G1911 hands ^G5495 on ^G1911 Him and arrested ^G2902 Him. 47 But one ^G1520 of those ^G3588 who stood ^G3936 by drew ^G4685 his sword ^G3162, and struck ^G3817 the slave ^G1401 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749 and [fn]cut ^G851 off ^G851 his ear ^G6090. 48 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Have you come ^G1831 out ^G1831 with swords ^G3162 and clubs ^G3586 to arrest ^G4815 Me, as you would against ^G1909 a man ^G3027 inciting ^G3027 a ^G3027 revolt ^G3027? 49 Every ^G2596 day ^G2250 I was with you within ^G1722 the temple ^G2413 grounds teaching ^G1321, and you did not arrest ^G2902 Me; but this has taken place so ^G2443 that ^G2443 the Scriptures ^G1124 will be fulfilled ^G4137.” 50 And [fn]His disciples all ^G3956 left ^G863 Him and fled ^G5343.

51 A young ^G3495 man ^G3495 was following ^G4870 Him, wearing ^G4016 nothing but a linen ^G4616 sheet ^G4616 over ^G1909 his naked ^G1131 body; and they *seized ^G2902 him. 52 But he [fn]pulled ^G2641 free ^G2641 of the linen ^G4616 sheet ^G4616 and escaped ^G5343 naked ^G1131.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 They led ^G520 Jesus ^G2424 away ^G520 to the high ^G749 priest ^G749; and all ^G3956 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749, the elders ^G4245, and the scribes ^G1122 *gathered ^G4905 together ^G4905.

54 And Peter ^G4074 had followed ^G190 Him at a distance ^G3113, right ^G2193 into the courtyard ^G833 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749; and he was sitting ^G4775 with the [fn]officers ^G5257 and warming ^G2328 himself at the [fn]fire ^G5457. 55 Now ^G1161 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the entire ^G3650 [fn]Council ^G4892 were trying ^G2212 to ^G2212 obtain ^G2212 testimony ^G3141 against ^G2596 Jesus ^G2424 to put ^G2289 Him to ^G2289 death ^G2289, and they were not finding ^G2147 any. 56 For many ^G4183 people ^G4183 were giving ^G5576 false ^G5576 testimony ^G5576 against ^G2596 Him, and so their testimonies ^G3141 were not consistent ^G2470. 57 And then some ^G5100 stood ^G450 up ^G450 and began giving ^G5576 false ^G5576 testimony ^G5576 against ^G2596 Him, saying ^G3004, 58 “We heard ^G191 Him say ^G3004, ‘I will destroy ^G2647 this ^G3778 [fn]temple ^G3485 that was made ^G5499 by ^G5499 hands ^G5499, and in three ^G5140 days ^G2250 I will build ^G3618 another ^G243, made ^G886 without ^G886 hands ^G886.’” 59 And not even ^G3761 in ^G3779 this ^G3779 respect ^G3779 was their testimony ^G3141 consistent ^G2470. 60 And then the high ^G749 priest ^G749 stood ^G450 up ^G450 and came forward ^G1519 G3319 and questioned ^G1905 Jesus ^G2424, saying ^G3004, “Do You not offer ^G611 any ^G3762 answer ^G611 for what ^G5101 these ^G3778 men ^G3778 are testifying ^G2649 against ^G2649 You?” 61 But He kept ^G4623 silent ^G4623 and did not offer ^G611 any ^G3762 answer ^G611. Again ^G3825 the high ^G749 priest ^G749 was questioning ^G1905 Him, and *said ^G3004 to Him, “Are You the [fn]Christ ^G5547, the Son ^G5207 of [fn]the Blessed ^G2128 One?” 62 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “I am ^G1510; and you shall see ^G3708 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 sitting ^G2521 at the right ^G1188 hand ^G1188 of power ^G1411, and coming ^G2064 with the clouds ^G3507 of heaven ^G3772.” 63 Tearing ^G1284 his clothes ^G5509, the high ^G749 priest ^G749 *said ^G3004, “What ^G5101 further ^G2089 need ^G5532 do we have ^G2192 of witnesses ^G3144? 64 You have heard ^G191 the blasphemy ^G988; how ^G5101 does it seem ^G5316 to you?” And they all ^G3956 condemned ^G2632 Him as deserving ^G1777 of death ^G2288. 65 And some ^G5100 began ^G757 to spit ^G1716 on Him, and [fn]to blindfold ^G4028 G4383 Him, and to beat ^G2852 Him with ^G2852 their fists ^G2852 and say ^G3004 to Him, “Prophesy ^G4395!” Then the officers ^G5257 took ^G2983 custody ^G2983 of Him [fn]and slapped ^G4475 Him in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 And while Peter ^G4074 was below ^G2736 in the courtyard ^G833, one ^G1520 of the slave ^G3814 women ^G3814 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749 *came ^G2064,

67 and seeing ^G3708 Peter ^G4074 warming ^G2328 himself, she looked ^G1689 at ^G1689 him and *said ^G3004, “You were with Jesus ^G2424 the Nazarene ^G3479 as ^G2532 well ^G2532.” 68 But he denied ^G720 it, saying ^G3004, “I neither ^G3777 know ^G6063 nor ^G3777 understand ^G1987 what ^G5101 you are talking ^G3004 about.” And he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 onto ^G1519 the [fn]porch ^G4259.[fn] 69 The slave ^G3814 woman ^G3814 saw ^G3708 him, and began ^G757 once ^G3825 more ^G3825 to say ^G3004 to the bystanders ^G3936, “This ^G3778 man ^G3778 is one of them!” 70 But again ^G3825 he denied ^G720 it. And after ^G3326 a little ^G3398 while ^G3398 the bystanders ^G3936 were again ^G3825 saying ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074, “You really ^G230 are one of them, for you are a Galilean ^G1057 as ^G2532 well ^G2532.” 71 But he began ^G757 to [fn]curse ^G332 himself and to swear ^G3660, “I do not know ^G6063 this ^G3778 Man ^G444 of whom you speak ^G3004!” 72 And immediately ^G2117 a rooster ^G220 crowed ^G5455 a second ^G1208 time ^G1208. And Peter ^G4074 remembered ^G363 how ^G5613 Jesus ^G2424 had made ^G3004 the remark ^G4487 to him, “Before ^G4250 a rooster ^G220 crows ^G5455 twice ^G1364, you will deny ^G533 Me three ^G5151 times ^G5151.” And [fn]he hurried ^G1911 on ^G1911 and began to weep ^G2799.
