Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce

1 Setting ^G450 out ^G450 from ^G1564 there ^G1564, Jesus *went ^G2064 to the region ^G3725 of Judea ^G2449 and beyond ^G4008 the Jordan ^G2446; crowds ^G3793 *gathered ^G4848 to Him again ^G3825, and, as He was accustomed ^G1486, He once ^G3825 more ^G3825 began to teach ^G1321 them.

2 And some Pharisees ^G5330 came ^G4334 up ^G4334 to Jesus, testing ^G3985 Him, and began questioning ^G1905 Him whether ^G1487 it was lawful ^G1832 for a man ^G435 to [fn]divorce ^G630 his wife ^G1135.

3 And He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “What ^G5101 did Moses ^G3475 command ^G1781 you?” 4 They said ^G3004, “Moses ^G3475 permitted ^G2010 a man to write ^G1125 a [fn]certificate ^G975 of divorce ^G647 and [fn]send ^G630 his wife away ^G630.” 5 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “[fn]Because ^G4314 of your hardness ^G4641 of ^G4641 heart ^G4641 he wrote ^G1125 you this ^G3778 commandment ^G1785. 6 But from the beginning ^G746 of creation ^G2937, God CREATED ^G4160 THEM MALE ^G730 AND FEMALE ^G2338. 7 FOR THIS ^G3778 REASON ^G6025 A MAN ^G444 SHALL LEAVE ^G2641 HIS FATHER ^G3962 AND MOTHER ^G3384[fn], 8 AND THE TWO ^G1417 SHALL BECOME ^G1510 G1519 ONE ^G1520 FLESH ^G4561; so ^G5620 they are no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 two ^G1417, but one ^G1520 flesh ^G4561. 9 Therefore ^G3767, what ^G3739 God ^G2316 has joined ^G4801 together ^G4801, no ^G3361 person ^G444 is to separate ^G5563.”

10 And in the house ^G3614 the disciples ^G3101 again ^G3825 began questioning ^G1905 Him about ^G4012 this ^G3778. 11 And He *said ^G3004 to them, “Whoever ^G3739 G302 [fn]divorces ^G630 his wife ^G1135 and marries ^G1060 another ^G243 woman ^G243 commits ^G3429 adultery ^G3429 against ^G1909 her; 12 and if ^G1437 she herself ^G846 [fn]divorces ^G630 her husband ^G435 and marries ^G1060 another ^G243 man ^G243, she is committing ^G3431 adultery ^G3429.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 And they were bringing ^G4374 children ^G3813 to Him so ^G2443 that ^G2443 He would touch ^G681 them; but the disciples ^G3101 rebuked ^G2008 them.

14 But when Jesus ^G2424 saw ^G3708 this, He was indignant ^G23 and said ^G3004 to them, “Allow ^G863 the children ^G3813 to come ^G2064 to Me; do not [fn]forbid ^G2967 them, for the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 belongs ^G1510 to such ^G5108 as ^G5108 these ^G5108. 15 Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, whoever ^G3739 G302 does not receive ^G1209 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 like ^G5613 a child ^G3813 will not enter ^G1525 it at ^G3361 all ^G3361.” 16 And He took ^G1723 them in ^G1723 His arms ^G1723 and began blessing ^G6050 them, laying ^G5087 His hands ^G5495 on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17 As He was setting ^G1607 out ^G1607 on a journey ^G3598, a man ^G1520 ran ^G4370 up ^G4370 to Him and knelt ^G1120 before ^G1120 Him, and asked ^G1905 Him, “Good ^G18 Teacher ^G1320, what ^G5101 shall I do ^G4160 so ^G2443 that ^G2443 I may inherit ^G2816 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222?”

18 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “Why ^G5101 do you call ^G3004 Me good ^G18? No ^G3762 one ^G3762 is good ^G18 except ^G1508 God ^G2316 alone ^G1520. 19 You know ^G6063 the commandments ^G1785: ‘DO NOT MURDER ^G5407, DO NOT COMMIT ^G3431 ADULTERY ^G3431, DO NOT STEAL ^G2813, DO NOT GIVE ^G5576 FALSE ^G5576 TESTIMONY ^G5576, Do not defraud ^G650, HONOR ^G5091 YOUR FATHER ^G3962 AND MOTHER ^G3384.’” 20 And he said ^G5346 to Him, “Teacher ^G1320, I have kept ^G5442 all ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 from my youth ^G3503.” 21 Looking ^G1689 at ^G1689 him, Jesus ^G2424 showed ^G25 love ^G25 to him and said ^G3004 to him, “One ^G1520 thing ^G1520 you lack ^G5302: go ^G5217 and sell ^G4453 all ^G3745 you possess ^G2192 and give ^G1325 to the poor ^G4434, and you will have ^G2192 treasure ^G2344 in heaven ^G3772; and come ^G1204, follow ^G190 Me.” 22 But he [fn]was deeply ^G4768 dismayed ^G4768 by [fn]these ^G3588 words ^G3056, and he went ^G565 away ^G565 grieving ^G3076; for he was one who owned ^G2192 much ^G4183 property ^G2933.

23 And Jesus ^G2424, looking ^G4017 around ^G4017, *said ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, “How ^G4459 hard ^G1423 it will be for those ^G3588 who are wealthy ^G5536 to enter ^G1525 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316!” 24 And the disciples ^G3101 were amazed ^G2284 at His words ^G3056. But Jesus ^G2424 responded ^G611 again ^G3825 and *said ^G3004 to them, “Children ^G5043, how ^G4459 hard ^G1422 it is to enter ^G1525 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316! 25 It is easier ^G2123 for a camel ^G2574 to go ^G1330 through ^G1223 the eye ^G5168 of a needle ^G4476 than ^G2228 for a rich ^G4145 person ^G4145 to enter ^G1525 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.” 26 And they were even ^G4057 more ^G4057 astonished ^G1605, and said ^G3004 to Him, “[fn]Then ^G2532 who ^G5101 can ^G1410 be saved ^G4982?” 27 Looking ^G1689 at ^G1689 them, Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004, “With people ^G444 it is impossible ^G102, but not with God ^G2316; for all ^G3956 things ^G3956 are possible ^G1415 with God ^G2316.”

28 Peter ^G4074 began ^G757 to say ^G3004 to Him, “Behold ^G2400, we have left ^G863 everything ^G3956 and have followed ^G190 You.” 29 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G5346, “Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, there is no ^G3762 one ^G3762 who ^G3739 has left ^G863 house ^G3614 or ^G2228 brothers ^G80 or ^G2228 sisters ^G79 or ^G2228 mother ^G3384 or ^G2228 father ^G3962 or ^G2228 children ^G5043 or ^G2228 farms ^G68, for My sake ^G6025 and for the gospel’s ^G2098 sake ^G6025, 30 [fn]but that he will receive ^G2983 a hundred ^G1542 times ^G1542 as ^G1542 much ^G1542 now ^G3568 in [fn]the present ^G3778 age ^G2540, houses ^G3614 and brothers ^G80 and sisters ^G79 and mothers ^G3384 and children ^G5043 and farms ^G68, along with persecutions ^G1375; and in the age ^G165 to come ^G2064, eternal ^G166 life ^G2222. 31 But many ^G4183 who are first ^G4413 will be last ^G2078, and the last ^G2078, first ^G4413.”

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

32 Now ^G1161 they were on the road ^G3598 going ^G305 up ^G305 to Jerusalem ^G2414, and Jesus ^G2424 was walking ^G4254 on ahead ^G4254 of them; and they were amazed ^G2284, and those ^G3588 who followed ^G190 were ^G5399 fearful ^G5399. And again ^G3825 He took ^G3880 the twelve ^G1427 aside ^G3880 and began ^G757 to tell ^G3004 them what ^G3588 was ^G3195 going ^G3195 to ^G3195 happen ^G4819 to Him,

33 saying, “Behold ^G2400, we are going ^G305 up ^G305 to Jerusalem ^G2414, and the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 will be [fn]handed ^G3860 over ^G3860 to the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the scribes ^G1122; and they will condemn ^G2632 Him to death ^G2288 and will [fn]hand ^G3860 Him over ^G3860 to the Gentiles ^G1484. 34 And they will mock ^G1702 Him and spit ^G1716 on ^G1716 Him, and flog ^G3146 Him and kill ^G615 Him; and three ^G5140 days ^G2250 later ^G3326 He will rise ^G450 from the dead.”

35 [fn]James ^G2385 and John ^G2491, the two ^G1417 sons ^G5207 of Zebedee ^G2199, *came ^G4365 up ^G4365 to [fn]Jesus, saying ^G3004 to Him, “Teacher ^G1320, we want ^G2309 You to do ^G4160 for us whatever ^G3739 G1437 we ask ^G154 of You.” 36 And He said ^G3004 to them, “What ^G5101 do you want ^G2309 Me to do ^G4160 for you?” 37 They said ^G3004 to Him, “[fn]Grant ^G1325 that we may sit ^G2523, one ^G1520 on Your right ^G1188 and one ^G1520 on Your left ^G710, in Your glory ^G1391.” 38 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “You do not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 you are asking ^G154. Are you able ^G1410 to drink ^G4095 the cup ^G4221 that I drink ^G4095, or ^G2228 to be baptized ^G907 with the baptism ^G908 with which ^G3739 I am baptized ^G907?” 39 They said ^G3004 to Him, “We are able ^G1410.” And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “The cup ^G4221 that I drink ^G4095 you shall drink ^G4095; and you shall be baptized ^G907 with the baptism ^G908 with which ^G3739 I am baptized ^G907. 40 But to sit ^G2523 on My right ^G1188 or ^G2228 on My left ^G2176 is not Mine ^G1699 to give ^G1325; but it is for those for whom ^G3739 it has been prepared ^G2090.”

41 Hearing ^G191 this, the other ten ^G1176 began ^G757 to feel ^G23 indignant ^G23 with [fn]James ^G2385 and John ^G2491. 42 Calling ^G4341 them to Himself, Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to them, “You know ^G6063 that those ^G3588 who are recognized ^G1380 as rulers ^G757 of the Gentiles ^G1484 domineer ^G2634 over ^G2634 them; and their [fn]people ^G3173 in ^G3173 high ^G3173 position ^G3173 exercise ^G2715 authority ^G2715 over ^G2715 them. 43 But it is not this ^G3779 way ^G3779 among ^G1722 you; rather ^G235, whoever ^G3739 G302 wants ^G2309 to become ^G1096 [fn]prominent ^G3173 among ^G1722 you shall be your servant ^G1249; 44 and whoever ^G3739 G302 wants ^G2309 to be first ^G4413 among ^G1722 you shall be slave ^G1401 of all ^G3956. 45 For even ^G2532 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 did not come ^G2064 to be served ^G1247, but to serve ^G1247, and to give ^G1325 His [fn]life ^G5590 as a ransom ^G3083 for many ^G4183.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46 Then ^G2532 they *came ^G2064 to Jericho ^G2410. And later, as He was leaving ^G1607 Jericho ^G2410 with His disciples ^G3101 and a large ^G2425 crowd ^G3793, a beggar ^G6075 who was blind ^G5185 named Bartimaeus ^G924, the son ^G5207 of Timaeus ^G5090, was sitting ^G2521 by the road ^G3598.

47 And when he heard ^G191 that it was Jesus ^G2424 the Nazarene ^G3479, he began ^G757 to cry ^G2896 out ^G2896 and say ^G3004, “Jesus ^G2424, Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me!” 48 Many ^G4183 were sternly ^G2008 telling ^G2008 him to be quiet ^G4623, but he kept crying ^G2896 out ^G2896 all ^G4183 the more ^G3123, “Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me!” 49 And Jesus ^G2424 stopped ^G2476 and said ^G3004, “Call ^G5455 him here.” So ^G2532 they *called ^G5455 the man ^G5185 who ^G5185 was ^G5185 blind ^G5185, saying ^G3004 to him, “Take ^G2293 courage ^G2293, stand ^G1453 up ^G1453! He is calling ^G5455 for you.” 50 And throwing ^G577 off ^G577 his cloak ^G2440, he jumped ^G375 up ^G375 and came ^G2064 to Jesus ^G2424. 51 And replying ^G611 to him, Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “What ^G5101 do you want ^G2309 Me to do ^G4160 for you?” And the man ^G5185 who ^G5185 was ^G5185 blind ^G5185 said ^G3004 to Him, “[fn]Rabboni ^G4462, I want to regain ^G308 my sight ^G308!” 52 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “Go ^G5217; your faith ^G4102 has [fn]made ^G4982 you well ^G4982.” And immediately ^G2117 he regained ^G308 his sight ^G308 and began following ^G190 Him on the road ^G3598.
