Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much

1 Then Eliphaz ^H464 the Temanite ^H8489 responded ^H6030 H559,

2 “Should a wise ^H2450 man ^H2450 answer ^H6030 with windy ^H7307 knowledge ^H1847,

And fill ^H4390 [fn]himself ^H990 with the east ^H6921 wind ^H6921?

3 “Should he argue ^H3198 with useless ^H3808 H5532 talk ^H1697,

Or with words ^H4405 which do not benefit ^H3276?

4 “Indeed ^H637, you do ^H6565 away ^H6565 with [fn]reverence ^H3374,

And hinder ^H1639 meditation ^H7881 before ^H6440 God ^H410.

5 “For your wrongdoing ^H5771 teaches ^H502 your mouth ^H6310,

And you choose ^H977 the language ^H3956 of the cunning ^H6175.

6 “Your own mouth ^H6310 condemns ^H7561 you, and not I;

And your own lips ^H8193 testify ^H6030 against you.

7 “Were you the first ^H7223 person ^H120 to be born ^H3205,

Or were you brought ^H2342 forth ^H2342 before ^H6440 the hills ^H1389?

8 “Do you hear ^H8085 the secret ^H5475 discussion ^H5475 of God ^H433,

And limit ^H1639 wisdom ^H2451 to yourself?

9 “What ^H4100 do you know ^H3045 that we do not know ^H3045?

What do you understand ^H995 that [fn]we do not?

10 “Both ^H1571 the gray-haired ^H7867 and the aged ^H3453 are among us,

Older ^H3524 H3117 than ^H4480 your father ^H1.

11 “Are the consolations ^H8575 of God ^H410 too ^H4480 little ^H4592 for you,

Or the word ^H1697 spoken gently ^H328 to you?

12 “Why ^H4100 does your heart ^H3820 take ^H3947 you away?

And why ^H4100 do your eyes ^H5869 wink ^H7335,

13 That you can turn ^H7725 your spirit ^H7307 against ^H413 God ^H410

And produce ^H3318 such words ^H4405 from your mouth ^H6310?

14 “What ^H4100 is man ^H582, that he would be ^H2135 pure ^H2135,

Or he who is born ^H3205 of a woman ^H802, that he would be ^H6663 righteous ^H6663?

15 “Behold ^H2005, He has ^H539 no ^H3808 trust ^H539 in His holy ^H6918 ones ^H6918,

And the heavens ^H8064 are not pure ^H2141 in His sight ^H5869;

16 How ^H637 much ^H637 H3588 less ^H637 one who is detestable ^H8581 and corrupt ^H444:

A person ^H376 who drinks ^H8354 [fn]malice ^H5766 like water ^H4325!

What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life

17 “I will tell ^H2331 you, listen ^H8085 to me;

And what ^H2088 I have seen ^H2372 I will also declare ^H5608;

18 What ^H834 wise ^H2450 people ^H2450 have told ^H5046,

And have not concealed ^H3582 from their fathers ^H1,

19 To whom ^H1992 alone ^H905 the land ^H776 was given ^H5414,

And no ^H3808 stranger ^H2114 passed ^H5674 among ^H8432 them.

20 “The wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563 writhes ^H2342 in ^H2342 pain ^H2342 all ^H3605 his days ^H3117,

And the [fn]years ^H8141 reserved ^H6845 for the ruthless ^H6184 are numbered ^H4557.

21 “[fn]Sounds ^H6963 of terror ^H6343 are in his ears ^H241;

While he is at peace ^H7965 the destroyer ^H7703 comes ^H935 upon him.

22 “He does not believe ^H539 that he will return ^H7725 from darkness ^H2822,

And he is destined ^H6822 for the sword ^H2719.

23 “He wanders ^H5074 about ^H5074 for food ^H3899, saying, ‘Where ^H346 is it?’

He knows ^H3045 that a day ^H3117 of darkness ^H2822 is [fn]at hand ^H3027.

24 “Distress ^H6862 and anguish ^H4691 terrify ^H1204 him,

They overpower ^H8630 him like a king ^H4428 ready ^H6264 for the attack ^H3593,

25 Because ^H3588 he has reached ^H5186 out ^H5186 with his hand ^H3027 against ^H413 God ^H410,

And is arrogant ^H1396 toward ^H413 [fn]the Almighty ^H7706.

26 “He rushes ^H7323 [fn]headlong ^H6677 at Him

With his [fn]massive ^H5672 H1354 shield ^H4043.

27 “For he has covered ^H3680 his face ^H6440 with his fat ^H2459,

And [fn]put ^H6213 fat ^H6371 on his waist ^H3689.

28 “He has lived ^H7931 in ^H7931 desolate ^H3582 cities ^H5892,

In houses ^H1004 no ^H3808 one would inhabit ^H3427,

Which ^H834 are destined ^H6257 to ^H6257 become ^H6257 [fn]ruins ^H1530.

29 “He will not become ^H6238 rich ^H6238, nor ^H3808 will his wealth ^H2428 endure ^H6965;

And his property ^H4512 will not stretch ^H5186 out ^H5186 on the earth ^H776.

30 “He will not [fn]escape ^H5493 from darkness ^H2822;

The flame ^H7957 will dry ^H3001 up ^H3001 his shoot ^H3127,

And he will go ^H5493 away ^H5493 by the breath ^H7307 of His mouth ^H6310.

31 “Let him not trust ^H539 in emptiness ^H7723, deceiving ^H8582 himself;

For his [fn]reward ^H8545 will be emptiness ^H7723.

32 “It will be accomplished ^H4390 before ^H3808 his time ^H3117,

And his palm ^H3712 branch ^H3712 will not be green ^H7488.

33 “He will drop ^H2554 off ^H2554 his unripe ^H1155 grape ^H1155 like the vine ^H1612,

And will cast ^H7993 off ^H7993 his flower ^H5328 like the olive ^H2132 tree ^H2132.

34 “For the company ^H5712 of the godless ^H2611 is barren ^H1565,

And fire ^H784 consumes ^H398 the tents ^H168 of [fn]the corrupt ^H7810.

35 “They conceive ^H2029 [fn]harm ^H5999 and give ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to wrongdoing ^H205,

And their [fn]mind ^H990 prepares ^H3559 deception ^H4820.”
