Job Speaks of the Finality of Death
1 “Man H120, who is born H3205 of woman H802,
Is [fn]short-lived H7116 H3117 and full H7649 of turmoil H7267.
2 “Like a flower H6731 he comes H3318 out H3318 and withers H4448.
He also flees H1272 like a shadow H6738 and does not remain H5975.
3 “You also H637 open H6491 Your eyes H5869 on him
And bring H935 [fn]him into judgment H4941 with Yourself.
4 “Who H4310 can make H5414 the clean H2889 out of the unclean H2931?
5 “Since H518 his days H3117 are determined H2782,
The number H4557 of his months H2320 is with You;
And You have [fn]set H6213 his limits H2706 so that he cannot H3808 pass H5674.
6 “Look H8159 away H8159 from him so that he may [fn]rest H2308,
Until H5704 he [fn]fulfills H7521 his day H3117 like a hired H7916 worker H7916.
7 “For there H3426 is H3426 hope H8615 for a tree H6086,
When H518 it is cut H3772 down H3772, that it will sprout H2498 again H5750,
And its shoots H3127 will not [fn]fail H2308.
8 “Though H518 its roots H8328 grow H2204 old H2204 in the ground H776,
And its stump H1503 dies H4191 in the dry H6083 soil H6083,
9 At the scent H7381 of water H4325 it will flourish H6524
And produce H6213 sprigs H7105 like H3644 a plant H5194.
10 “But a man H1397 dies H4191 and lies H2522 prostrate H2522.
A person H120 passes H1478 away H1478, and where H335 is he?
11 “As water H4325 [fn]evaporates H235 from the sea H3220,
And a river H5104 becomes H2717 parched H2717 and dried H3001 up H3001,
12 So a man H376 lies H7901 down H7901 and does not rise H6965.
Until H5704 the heavens H8064 no H1115 longer H1115 exist H1115,
[fn]He will not awake H6974 nor H3808 be woken H5782 from [fn]his sleep H8142.
13 “Oh H4310 H5414 that H4310 H5414 You would hide H6845 me in [fn]Sheol H7585,
That You would conceal H5641 me until H5704 Your wrath H639 returns H7725 to You,
That You would set H7896 a limit H2706 for me and remember H2142 me!
14 “If H518 a man H1397 dies H4191, will he live H2421 again?
All H3605 the days H3117 of my struggle H6635 I will wait H3176
Until H5704 my relief H2487 comes H935.
15 “You will call H7121, and I will answer H6030 You;
You will long H3700 for the work H4639 of Your hands H3027.
16 “For now H6258 You number H5608 my steps H6806,
You do not observe H8104 my sin H2403.
17 “My wrongdoing H6588 is sealed H2856 up H2856 in a bag H6872,
And You cover H2950 over H5921 my [fn]guilt H5771.
18 “But the falling H5307 mountain H2022 [fn]crumbles H5034 away H5034,
And the rock H6697 moves H6275 from its place H4725;
19 Water H4325 wears H7833 away H7833 stones H68,
Its torrents H5599 wash H7857 away H7857 the dust H6083 of the earth H776;
So You destroy H6 a man’s H582 hope H8615.
20 “You forever H5331 overpower H8630 him and he departs H1980;
You change H8132 his appearance H6440 and send H7971 him away H7971.
21 “His sons H1121 achieve H3513 honor H3513, but he does not know H3045 it;
Or they become H6819 insignificant H6819, and he does not perceive H995 it.
