Job’s Character and Wealth
1 There was a man H376 in the land H776 of Uz H5780 whose name H8034 was Job H347; and that man H376 was blameless H8535, upright H3477, fearing H3372 God H430 and turning H5493 away H5493 from evil H7451.
2 Seven H7651 sons H1121 and three H7969 daughters H1323 were born H3205 to him. 3 His possessions H4735 were seven H7651 thousand H505 sheep H6629, three H7969 thousand H505 camels H1581, five H2568 hundred H3967 yoke H6776 of oxen H1241, five H2568 hundred H3967 female H860 donkeys H860, and very H3966 many H7227 servants H5657; and that man H376 was the greatest H1419 of all H3605 the [fn]men H1121 of the east H6924. 4 His sons H1121 used to go H1980 and hold H6213 a feast H4960 in the house H1004 of each H376 one H376 on his day H3117, and they would send H7971 word and invite H7121 their three H7969 sisters H269 to eat H398 and drink H8354 with them. 5 When H3588 the days H3117 of feasting H4960 had completed H5362 their cycle H5362, Job H347 would send H7971 word to them and consecrate H6942 them, getting H7925 up H7925 early H7925 in the morning H1242 and offering H5927 burnt H5930 offerings H5930 according to the number H4557 of them all H3605; for Job H347 said H559, “Perhaps H194 my sons H1121 have sinned H2398 and cursed H1288 God H430 in their hearts H3824.” Job H347 did H6213 so H3602 continually H3605 H3117.
6 Now there was a day H3117 when the [fn]sons H1121 of God H430 came H935 to present H3320 themselves before H5921 the LORD H3068, and [fn]Satan H7854 also H1571 came H935 among H8432 them. 7 The LORD H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “From where H370 do you come H935?” Satan H7854 answered H6030 the LORD H3068 and said H559, “From roaming H7751 about H7751 on the earth H776 and walking H1980 around H1980 on it.” 8 The LORD H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “Have you [fn]considered H7760 H3820 H5921 My servant H5650 Job H347? For there H369 is H369 no H369 one H369 like H3644 him on the earth H776, a blameless H8535 and upright H3477 man H376, [fn]fearing H3372 God H430 and turning H5493 away H5493 from evil H7451.” 9 Then Satan H7854 answered H6030 the [fn]LORD H3068, “Does Job H347 fear H3372 God H430 for H2600 nothing H2600? 10 Have You not made H7753 a H7753 fence H7753 around H1157 him and his house H1004 and all H3605 that he has, on every H5439 side H5439? You have blessed H1288 the work H4639 of his hands H3027, and his possessions H4735 have increased H6555 in the land H776. 11 But reach H7971 out H7971 with Your hand H3027 now H4994 and touch H5060 all H3605 that he has; he will certainly H518 H3808 curse H1288 You to Your face H6440.” 12 Then the LORD H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “Behold H2009, all H3605 that he has is in your [fn]power H3027; only H7534 do not reach H7971 out H7971 and put your hand H3027 on him.” So Satan H7854 departed H3318 from the presence H6440 of the LORD H3068.
Satan Allowed to Test Job
13 Now on the day H3117 when his sons H1121 and his daughters H1323 were eating H398 and drinking H8354 wine H3196 in their oldest H1060 brother’s H251 house H1004,
14 a messenger H4397 came H935 to Job H347 and said H559, “The oxen H1241 were plowing H2790 and the female H860 donkeys H860 feeding H7462 beside H5921 H3027 them, 15 and [fn]the Sabeans H7614 [fn]attacked H5307 and took H3947 them. They also [fn]killed H5221 the servants H5288 with the edge H6310 of the sword H2719, and [fn]I alone H905 H7534 have escaped H4422 to tell H5046 you.” 16 While he was still H5750 speaking H1696, another H2088 came H935 and said H559, “The fire H784 of God H430 fell H5307 from heaven H8064 and burned H1197 up H1197 the sheep H6629 and the servants H5288 and consumed H398 them, and I alone H905 H7534 have escaped H4422 to tell H5046 you.” 17 While he was still H5750 speaking H1696, another H2088 came H935 and said H559, “The Chaldeans H3778 formed H7760 three H7969 units H7218 and made H6584 a H6584 raid H6584 on the camels H1581 and took H3947 them, and [fn]killed H5221 the servants H5288 with the edge H6310 of the sword H2719, and I alone H905 H7534 have escaped H4422 to tell H5046 you.” 18 While he was still speaking H1696, another H2088 also came H935 and said H559, “Your sons H1121 and your daughters H1323 were eating H398 and drinking H8354 wine H3196 in their oldest H1060 brother’s H251 house H1004, 19 and behold H2009, a great H1419 wind H7307 came H935 from across H5676 the wilderness H4057 and struck H5221 the four H702 corners H6438 of the house H1004, and it fell H5307 on the young H5288 people H5288 and they died H4191, and I alone H905 H7534 have escaped H4422 to tell H5046 you.”
20 Then Job H347 got H6965 up H6965, tore H7167 his robe H4598, and shaved H1494 his head H7218; then he fell H5307 to the ground H776 and worshiped H2331. 21 He said H559,
“Naked H6174 I came H3318 from my mother’s H517 womb H990,
And naked H6174 I shall return H7725 there H8033.
The LORD H3068 gave H5414 and the LORD H3068 has taken H3947 away.
Blessed H1288 be the name H8034 of the LORD H3068.”
22 Despite all H3605 this H2088, Job H347 did not sin H2398, nor H3808 did he [fn]blame H5414 H8604 God H430.
