Law of Divorce
“When H3588 a man H376 takes H3947 a wife H802 and marries H1166 her, and it happens H1961, if she finds H4672 no H3808 favor H2580 in his eyes H5869 because H3588 he has found H4672 some H1697 indecency H6172 in her, that he writes H3789 her a certificate H5612 of divorce H3748, puts H5414 it in her hand H3027, and [fn]sends H7971 her away H7971 from his house H1004,
and she leaves H3318 his house H1004 and goes H1980 and becomes H1961 another H312 man’s H376 wife, 3 and the latter H314 husband H376 [fn]turns H8130 against H8130 her, writes H3789 her a certificate H5612 of divorce H3748 and puts H5414 it in her hand H3027, and [fn]sends H7971 her away from his house H1004, or H176 if H3588 the latter H314 husband H376 who H834 took H3947 her to be his wife H802 dies H4191, 4 then her former H7223 husband H1167 who H834 [fn]sent H7971 her away H7971 is not allowed H3201 to take H3947 her again H7725 to be his wife H802, after H310 H834 [fn]she has been defiled H2930; for that is an abomination H8441 before H6440 the LORD H3068, and you shall not bring H2398 sin H2398 on the land H776 which H834 the LORD H3068 your God H430 is giving H5414 you as an inheritance H5159.
“When H3588 a man H376 takes H3947 a new H2319 wife H802, he is not to go H3318 out H3318 with the army H6635, nor H3808 be assigned H5674 any H3605 duty H1697; he shall be free H5355 at home H1004 for one H259 year H8141 and shall make H8055 his wife H802 whom H834 he has taken H3947 happy H8055.
Various Laws
“No H3808 one shall seize H2254 a handmill H7347 or an upper H7393 millstone H7393 as H2254 a H2254 pledge H2254 for a loan, since H3588 he would be seizing H2254 the debtor’s [fn]means of life H5315 as H2254 a H2254 pledge H2254.
“If H3588 someone H376 is [fn]caught H4672 kidnapping H1589 any H5315 of his countrymen H251 of the sons H1121 of Israel H3478, and he treats H6014 him as H6014 merchandise H6014 and sells H4376 him, then that thief H1590 shall die H4191; so you shall eliminate H1197 the evil H7451 from among H7130 you.
“Be H8104 careful H8104 about an infestation H5061 of leprosy H6883, that you are H8104 very H3966 attentive H8104 and act H6213 in accordance with everything H3605 that the Levitical H3881 priests H3548 teach H3384 you; just H834 as H834 I have commanded H6680 them, you shall be H8104 careful H8104 to act H6213.
Remember H2142 what H834 the LORD H3068 your God H430 did H6213 to Miriam H4813 on the way H1870 as you came H3318 out H3318 of Egypt H4714.
“When H3588 you make H5383 your neighbor H7453 a loan H4859 of any H3972 kind H3972, you shall not enter H935 his house H1004 to take H5670 his pledge H5667. 11 You shall stand H5975 outside H2351, and the person H376 to whom H834 you are making H5383 the loan H5383 shall bring H3318 the pledge H5667 outside H2351 to you. 12 And if H518 he is a poor H6041 man H376, you shall not sleep H7901 with his pledge H5667. 13 When the sun H8121 goes H935 down you shall certainly H7725 return H7725 the pledge H5667 to him, so that he may sleep H7901 in his cloak H8008 and bless H1288 you; and it will be righteousness H6666 for you before H6440 the LORD H3068 your God H430.
“You shall not exploit H6231 a hired H7916 worker H7916 who is poor H6041 and needy H34, whether H4480 he is one of your countrymen H251 or H176 one of your strangers H1616 who H834 are in your land H776 in your [fn]towns H8179. 15 You shall give H5414 him his wages H7939 on his day H3117 [fn]before the sun H8121 sets H935—for he is poor H6041 and sets H5375 his [fn]heart H5315 on it—so that he does not cry H7121 out H7121 against H5921 you to the LORD H3068, and it becomes H1961 a sin H2399 in you.
“Fathers H1 shall not be put H4191 to H4191 death H4191 for their sons H1121, nor H3808 shall sons H1121 be put H4191 to H4191 death H4191 for their fathers H1; everyone H376 shall be put H4191 to H4191 death H4191 for his own sin H2399 alone.
“You shall not pervert H5186 the justice H4941 [fn]due a stranger H1616 or [fn]an orphan H3490, nor H3808 seize H2254 a widow’s H490 garment H899 as H2254 a H2254 [fn]pledge H2254. 18 But you are to remember H2142 that you were a slave H5650 in Egypt H4714, and that the LORD H3068 your God H430 redeemed H6299 you from there H8033; therefore H5921 H3651 I am commanding H6680 you to do H6213 this H2088 thing H1697.
“When H3588 you reap H7114 your harvest H7105 in your field H7704 and forget H7911 a sheaf H6016 in the field H7704, you are not to go H7725 back H7725 to get H3947 it; it shall belong H1961 to the stranger H1616, the [fn]orphan H3490, and to the widow H490, in H4616 order H4616 that H4616 the LORD H3068 your God H430 may bless H1288 you in all H3605 the work H4639 of your hands H3027. 20 When H3588 you beat H2251 the olives off H2251 your olive H2132 tree H2132, you are not to search H6286 through H6286 the branches H6286 [fn]again H310; that shall be left for the stranger H1616, the [fn]orphan H3490, and for the widow H490.
“When H3588 you gather H1219 the grapes of your vineyard H3754, you are not to [fn]go H5953 over H5953 it again H310; that shall be left for the stranger H1616, the [fn]orphan H3490, and the widow H490. 22 And you shall remember H2142 that you were a slave H5650 in the land H776 of Egypt H4714; therefore H5921 H3651 I am commanding H6680 you to do H6213 this H2088 thing H1697.
