The Sabbatical Year
1 “At the end H7093 of every seven H7651 years H8141 you shall [fn]grant H6213 a release H8059 of H8059 debts H8059.
2 And this H2088 is the regulation H1697 for the release H8059 of H8059 debts H8059: every H3605 creditor H1167 H4874 H3027 is to forgive H8058 what H834 he has loaned H5383 to his neighbor H7453; he shall not require H5065 it of his neighbor H7453 and his brother H251, because H3588 the LORD’S H3068 release H8059 has been proclaimed H7121. 3 From a foreigner H5237 you may require H5065 it, but your hand H3027 shall [fn]forgive H8058 whatever H834 of yours is with your brother H251. 4 However H657 H3588, there will be no H3808 poor H34 among you, since H3588 the LORD H3068 will certainly H1288 bless H1288 you in the land H776 which H834 the LORD H3068 your God H430 is giving H5414 you as an inheritance H5159 to possess H3423, 5 if H518 only H7534 you listen H8085 obediently H8085 to the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 your God H430, to [fn]follow H6213 carefully H8104 all H3605 this H2088 commandment H4687 which H834 I am commanding H6680 you today H3117. 6 For the LORD H3068 your God H430 will have blessed H1288 you just H834 as H834 He has promised H1696 you, and you will lend H5670 to many H7227 nations H1471, but you will not borrow H5670; and you will rule H4910 over many H7227 nations H1471, but they will not rule H4910 over you.
7 “If H3588 there is a poor H34 person H34 among you, one H259 of your brothers H251, in any H259 of your [fn]towns H8179 in your land H776 which H834 the LORD H3068 your God H430 is giving H5414 you, you shall not harden H553 your heart H3824, nor H3808 close H7092 your hand H3027 from your poor H34 brother H251; 8 but you shall fully H6605 open H6605 your hand H3027 to him, and generously H5670 lend H5670 him enough H1767 for his need H4270 in whatever H834 he lacks H2637. 9 Be H8104 careful H8104 that H6435 there is no H6435 mean-spirited H1100 [fn]thought H1697 in your heart H3824, [fn]such H559 as H559, ‘The seventh H7651 year H8141, the year H8141 of release H8059 of H8059 debts H8059, is near H7126,’ and your eye H5869 is H7489 malicious H7489 toward your poor H34 brother H251, and you give H5414 him nothing H3808; then he may cry H7121 out H7121 to the LORD H3068 against H5921 you, and it will be a sin H2399 in you. 10 You shall generously H5414 give H5414 to him, and your heart H3824 shall not be H7489 [fn]grudging H7489 when you give H5414 to him, because H3588 H1558 for this H2088 thing H1697 the LORD H3068 your God H430 will bless H1288 you in all H3605 your work H4639, and in all H3605 [fn]your undertakings H3027 H4916. 11 For the poor H34 will not cease H2308 [fn]to exist in the land H776; therefore H5921 H3651 I am commanding H6680 you, saying H559, ‘You shall fully H6605 open H6605 your hand H3027 to your brother H251, to your needy H6041 and poor H34 in your land H776.’
12 “If H3588 your fellow H251 countryman H251, a Hebrew H5680 man H5680 or H176 woman H5680, is sold H4376 to you, then he shall serve H5647 you for six H8337 years H8141, but in the seventh H7637 year H8141 you shall set H7971 him [fn]free H2670. 13 And when H3588 you set H7971 him [fn]free H2670, you shall not send H7971 him away H7971 empty-handed H7387. 14 You shall give H6059 generously H6059 to him from your flock H6629, your threshing H1637 floor H1637, and from your wine H3342 vat H3342; you shall give H5414 to him as the LORD H3068 your God H430 has blessed H1288 you. 15 And you are to remember H2142 that you were a slave H5650 in the land H776 of Egypt H4714, and the LORD H3068 your God H430 redeemed H6299 you; therefore H5921 H3651 I am commanding H6680 [fn]this H2088 of you today H3117. 16 But it shall come H1961 about H1961, if H3588 he says H559 to you, ‘I will not leave H3318 you,’ because H3588 he loves H157 you and your household H1004, since H3588 he is doing well H2895 with you, 17 then you shall take H3947 an [fn]awl H4836 and pierce H5414 it through his ear H241 into the door H1817, and he shall be your servant H5650 permanently H5769. You shall also H637 do H6213 the same H3651 to your female H519 slave H519.
18 “It shall not seem H7185 difficult H7185 for you when you set H7971 him [fn]free H2670, because H3588 he has given H5647 you six H8337 years H8141 with double H4932 the [fn]service H7939 of a hired H7916 worker H7916; so the LORD H3068 your God H430 will bless H1288 you in whatever H3605 H834 you do H6213.
19 “You shall consecrate H6942 to the LORD H3068 your God H430 all H3605 the firstborn H1060 males H2145 that are born H3205 in your herd H1241 and in your flock H6629; you shall not work H5647 with the firstborn H1060 of your herd H7794, nor H3808 shear H1494 the firstborn H1060 of your flock H6629. 20 You and your household H1004 shall eat H398 it every H8141 year H8141 before H6440 the LORD H3068 your God H430 in the place H4725 which H834 the LORD H3068 chooses H977. 21 But if H3588 it has H1961 any impairment H3971, such as a limp H6455, or H176 blindness H5787, or any H3605 serious H7451 impairment H3971, you shall not sacrifice H2076 it to the LORD H3068 your God H430. 22 You shall eat H398 it within your gates H8179; the unclean H2931 and the clean H2889 alike H3162 may eat it, as a gazelle H6643 or a deer H354. 23 Only H7534 you shall not eat H398 its blood H1818; you are to pour H8210 it out H8210 on the ground H776 like water H4325.
