Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.
Unless the LORD builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain;
unless the LORD watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain.
LORD, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I do not get involved with things
too great or too wondrous for me.
Now bless the LORD,
all you servants of the LORD
who stand in the LORD’s house at night!
for our captors there asked us for songs,
and our tormentors, for rejoicing:
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”
Singing songs to a troubled heart
is like taking off clothing on a cold day
or like pouring vinegar on soda.[fn]
It is better to listen to rebuke from a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools,
the doors at the street are shut
while the sound of the mill fades;
when one rises at the sound of a bird,
and all the daughters of song grow faint.
I will sing about the one I love,
a song about my loved one’s vineyard:
The one I love had a vineyard
on a very fertile hill.
On that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years — the life span of one king. At the end of seventy years, what the song says about the prostitute will happen to Tyre:
Pick up your lyre,
stroll through the city,
you forgotten prostitute.
Play skillfully,
sing many a song
so that you will be remembered.
On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city.
Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.
Your singing will be like that
on the night of a holy festival,
and your heart will rejoice
like one who walks to the music of a flute,
going up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the Rock of Israel.
Sing a new song to the LORD;
sing his praise from the ends of the earth,
you who go down to the sea with all that fills it,
you coasts and islands with your[fn] inhabitants.
“I will put an end to the noise of your songs, and the sound of your lyres will no longer be heard.
“Yes, to them you are like a singer of passionate songs who has a beautiful voice and plays skillfully on an instrument. They hear your words, but they don’t obey them.
Take away from me the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
“In that day the temple[fn] songs will become wailing” — this is the Lord GOD’s declaration. “Many dead bodies, thrown everywhere! Silence! ”
