“Come, let’s go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

After a long time[fn] Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers.

When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.

They were seated before him in order by age, from the firstborn to the youngest. The men looked at each other in astonishment.

The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your neighbor? ”[fn]

“Now announce to the people that both men and women should ask their neighbors for silver and gold items.”

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and then kissed him. They asked each other how they had been[fn] and went into the tent.

“Whenever they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I make a decision between one man and another. I teach them God’s statutes and laws.”

Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.

“If a person schemes and willfully[fn] acts against his neighbor to murder him, you must take him from my altar to be put to death.

“When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or his fist, and the injured man does not die but is confined to bed,

“When a man’s ox injures his neighbor’s ox and it dies, they must sell the live ox and divide its proceeds; they must also divide the dead animal.

“When a man gives his neighbor valuables[fn] or goods to keep, but they are stolen from that person’s house, the thief, if caught, must repay double.

“When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not there with it, the man must make full restitution.

“If you ever take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral, return it to him before sunset.

He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man fasten his sword to his side; go back and forth through the camp from entrance to entrance, and each of you kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’ ”

The LORD would speak with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend, then Moses would return to the camp. His assistant, the young man Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the inside of the tent.

“Do not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages due a hired worker must not remain with you until morning.

“Do not go about spreading slander among your people; do not jeopardize[fn] your neighbor’s life; I am the LORD.

“Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

“If a man commits adultery with a married woman ​— ​if he commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife ​— ​both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.

Someone could flee there who committed manslaughter, killing his neighbor accidentally without previously hating him. He could flee to one of these cities and stay alive:

“Do not give dishonest testimony against your neighbor.

“If your brother, the son of your mother,[fn] or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let’s go and worship other gods’ ​— ​which neither you nor your ancestors have known,

“This is how to cancel debt: Every creditor[fn] is to cancel what he has lent his neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his neighbor or brother, because the LORD’s release of debts has been proclaimed.

“Here is the law concerning a case of someone who kills a person and flees there to save his life, having killed his neighbor accidentally without previously hating him:

“But if someone hates his neighbor, lies in ambush for him, attacks him, and strikes him fatally, and flees to one of these cities,

“Do not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, established at the start in the inheritance you will receive in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess.

“take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death ​— ​the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor’s fiancée. You must purge the evil from you.

“Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him.

“When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want until you are full, but do not put any in your container.

“When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security.

“‘The one who moves his neighbor’s boundary marker is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen! ’

“‘The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen! ’

“And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not hand the one who committed manslaughter over to him, for he killed his neighbor accidentally and did not hate him beforehand.

They said to each other, “Who did this? ” After they made a thorough investigation, they said, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”

When Gideon arrived, there was a man telling his friend about a dream. He said, “Listen, I had a dream: a loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp, struck a tent, and it fell. The loaf turned the tent upside down so that it collapsed.”

When Gideon’s men blew their three hundred rams’ horns, the LORD caused the men in the whole army to turn on each other with their swords. They fled to Acacia House[fn] in the direction of Zererah as far as the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
