She named him Joseph[fn] and said, “May the LORD add another son to me.”

Laban named the mound Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.[fn]

Then Laban said, “This mound is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore the place was called Galeed

Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his relatives to eat a meal. So they ate a meal and spent the night on the mountain.

Jacob then named the place Peniel,[fn] “For I have seen God face to face,” he said, “yet my life has been spared.”

And he set up an altar there and called it God, the God of Israel.[fn]

Deborah, the one who had nursed and raised Rebekah,[fn] died and was buried under the oak south of Bethel. So Jacob named it Allon-bacuth.[fn]

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; you will no longer be named Jacob, but your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.

Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

With her last breath ​— ​for she was dying ​— ​she named him Ben-oni,[fn] but his father called him Benjamin.[fn]

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah.[fn]

Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh[fn] and said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and my whole family.”

And the second son he named Ephraim[fn] and said, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

the angel who has redeemed me from all harm —

may he bless these boys.

And may they be called by my name

and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,

and may they grow to be numerous within the land.
