This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hethites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.

He purchased a section of the field where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.[fn]

Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.

“Why should we die here in front of you ​— ​both us and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food. Then we with our land will become Pharaoh’s slaves. Give us seed so that we can live and not die, and so that the land won’t become desolate.”

The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for they had an allowance from Pharaoh. They ate from their allowance that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.

“If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled city is permanently transferred to its purchaser throughout his generations. It is not to be released on the Jubilee.

“Your male and female slaves are to be from the nations around you; you may purchase male and female slaves.

“The one who purchased him is to calculate the time from the year he sold himself to him until the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years. It will be set for him like the daily wages of a hired worker.

“In the Year of Jubilee the field will return to the one he bought it from, the original owner.

“The LORD will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Is this how you repay the LORD,

you foolish and senseless people?

Isn’t he your Father and Creator?[fn]

Didn’t he make you and sustain you?

Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the parcel of land Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.[fn] It was an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.

“I thought I should inform you: Buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do it. But if you do[fn] not want to redeem it, tell me so that I will know, because there isn’t anyone other than you to redeem it, and I am next after you.”

“I want to redeem it,” he answered.

So the redeemer removed his sandal and said to Boaz, “Buy back the property yourself.”

then he bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for 150 pounds[fn] of silver, and he built up the hill. He named the city he built Samaria[fn] based on the name Shemer, the owner of the hill.

“They are to give it to the carpenters, builders, and masons to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the temple.

they gave it to the carpenters and builders and also used it to buy quarried stone and timbers ​— ​for joining and making beams ​— ​for the buildings that Judah’s kings had destroyed.

and said, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish countrymen who were sold to foreigners, but now you sell your own countrymen, and we have to buy them back.” They remained silent and could not say a word.

Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of this wall, and all my subordinates were gathered there for the work. We didn’t buy any land.

Remember your congregation,

which you purchased long ago

and redeemed as the tribe for your own possession.

Remember Mount Zion where you dwell.

He brought them to his holy territory,

to the mountain his right hand acquired.

For it was you who created my inward parts;[fn]

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

let a wise person listen and increase learning,

and let a discerning person obtain guidance —

“Get wisdom, get understanding;

don’t forget or turn away from the words from my mouth.

“Wisdom is supreme ​— ​so get wisdom.

And whatever else you get, get understanding.

“The LORD acquired[fn] me

at the beginning of his creation,[fn]

before his works of long ago.

Anyone who ignores discipline despises himself,

but whoever listens to correction acquires good sense.[fn]

Get wisdom —

how much better it is than gold!

And get understanding —

it is preferable to silver.
