“Please forgive my sin once more and make an appeal to the LORD your God, so that he will just take this death away from me.”
“Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods, because he did wonders when the Egyptians acted arrogantly against Israel.”[fn]
“Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and God be with you. You be the one to represent the people before God and bring their cases to him.
“Now if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples, although the whole earth is mine,
“Now leave me alone, so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”
The following day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a grave sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I will be able to atone for your sin.”
“Now if you would only forgive their sin. But if not, please erase me from the book you have written.”
“Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about; see, my angel will go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will hold them accountable for their sin.”
For the LORD said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.”
“Now if I have indeed found favor with you, please teach me your ways, and I will know you, so that I may find favor with you. Now consider that this nation is your people.”
The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm weak?[fn] Now you will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you.”
So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “This horde will devour everything around us like an ox eats up the green plants in the field.”
Since Balak son of Zippor was Moab’s king at that time,
“Please come and put a curse on these people for me because they are more powerful than I am. I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that those you bless are blessed and those you curse are cursed.”
“‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the surface of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.’ ”
“Please stay here overnight as the others did, so that I may find out what else the LORD has to tell me.”
Balaam answered the donkey, “You made me look like a fool. If I had a sword in my hand, I’d kill you now! ”
“The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away from me, I would have killed you by now and let her live.”

“But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you except to fear the LORD your God by walking in all his ways, to love him, and to worship the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul?
“Your ancestors went down to Egypt, seventy people in all, and now the LORD your God has made you numerous, like the stars of the sky.
“Indeed, you have not yet come into the resting place and the inheritance the LORD your God is giving you.
“I have now brought the first of the land’s produce that you, LORD, have given me.
You will then place the container before the LORD your God and bow down to him.
“Therefore write down this song for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites; have them sing it,[fn] so that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites.
“See now that I alone am he;
there is no God but me.
I bring death and I give life;
I wound and I heal.
No one can rescue anyone from my power.
“Moses my servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites.
“Now please swear to me by the LORD that you will also show kindness to my father’s family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign[fn]
“Neither,” he replied. “I have now come as commander of the LORD’s army.”
Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in homage and asked him, “What does my lord want to say to his servant? ”
They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land. Please make a treaty with us.”
“So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey; go and meet them and say, “We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.” ’
This bread of ours was warm when we took it from our houses as food on the day we left to come to you; but see, it is now dry and crumbly.
All the leaders answered them, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
“Therefore you are cursed and will always be slaves — woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
“Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”
“As you see, the LORD has kept me alive these forty-five years as he promised, since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel was journeying in the wilderness. Here I am today, eighty-five years old.
“I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. My strength for battle and for daily tasks[fn] is now as it was then.
“Now give me this hill country the LORD promised me on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there, as well as large fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me and I will drive them out as the LORD promised.”
“Now that he has given your brothers rest, just as he promised them, return to your homes in your own land that Moses the LORD’s servant gave you across the Jordan.
