Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

So the LORD God said to the serpent:

Because you have done this,

you are cursed more than any livestock

and more than any wild animal.

You will move on your belly

and eat dust all the days of your life.

“You will eat bread[fn] by the sweat of your brow

until you return to the ground,

since you were taken from it.

For you are dust,

and you will return to dust.”

“I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.

Then Abraham answered, “Since I have ventured to speak to my lord ​— ​even though I am dust and ashes ​— ​

Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham, filling them with dirt.

“Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.

Who has counted the dust of Jacob

or numbered even one-fourth of Israel?

Let me die the death of the upright;

let the end of my life be like theirs.

The king tore down the altars that the kings of Judah had made on the roof of Ahaz’s upper chamber. He also tore down the altars that Manasseh had made in the two courtyards of the LORD’s temple. Then he smashed them[fn] there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley.

He even tore down the altar at Bethel and the high place that had been made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. He burned the high place, crushed it to dust, and burned the Asherah.

“LORD God, let your promise to my father David now come true. For you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

before his colleagues and the powerful men[fn] of Samaria and said, “What are these pathetic Jews doing? Can they restore it by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they ever finish it? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble? ”

In Judah, it was said:[fn]

The strength of the laborer fails,

since there is so much rubble.

We will never be able

to rebuild the wall.

When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognize him. They wept aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head.

how much more those who dwell in clay houses,

whose foundation is in the dust,

who are crushed like a moth!

For distress does not grow out of the soil,

and trouble does not sprout from the ground.

My flesh is clothed with maggots and encrusted with dirt.[fn]

My skin forms scabs[fn] and then oozes.

Why not forgive my sin

and pardon my iniquity?

For soon I will lie down in the grave.

“Please remember that you formed me like clay.

Will you now return me to dust?

If its roots grow old in the ground

and its stump starts to die in the soil,

as water wears away stones

and torrents wash away the soil from the land,

so you destroy a man’s hope.

I have sewn sackcloth over my skin;

I have buried my strength[fn] in the dust.

Will it go down to the gates of Sheol,

or will we descend together to the dust?

But I know that my Redeemer lives,[fn]

and at the end he will stand on the dust.

His frame may be full of youthful vigor,

but it will lie down with him in dust.

But they both lie in the dust,

and worms cover them.

and consign your gold to the dust,

the gold of Ophir to the stones in the wadis,

Though he piles up silver like dust

and heaps up fine clothing like clay —
