“Understand that I am bringing a flood — floodwaters on the earth to destroy every creature under heaven with the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
“Understand that I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you,
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations:
“Please say you’re my sister so it will go well for me because of you, and my life will be spared on your account.”
“Why did you say, ‘She’s my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife. Take her and go! ”
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the possessions for yourself.”
“that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’
But Abram said, “Lord GOD, what can you give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? ”[fn]
Abram continued, “Look, you have given me no offspring, so a slave born in[fn] my house will be my heir.”
He also said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
He said to him, “Bring me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him, saying, “I am God Almighty. Live[fn] in my presence and be blameless.
“As for me, here is my covenant with you: You will become the father of many nations.
But the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Can I really have a baby when I’m old? ’
“Look, I’ve got two daughters who haven’t been intimate with a man. I’ll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want[fn] to them. However, don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.”
Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience.[fn] I have also kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I have not let you touch her.
“Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.
“So when God had me wander from my father’s house, I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me, ‘He’s my brother.’ ”
“Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”
Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.”
“I am an alien residing among you. Give me burial property among you so that I can bury my dead.”[fn]
He said to them, “If you are willing for me to bury my dead, listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf
“to give me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me in your presence, for the full price, as burial property.”
“The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from my native land, who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘I will give this land to your offspring’[fn] — he will send his angel before you, and you can take a wife for my son from there.
“Whose daughter are you? ” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night? ”
“Before I had finished praying silently, there was Rebekah coming with her jug on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please let me have a drink.’
“Now, if you are going to show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; if not, tell me, and I will go elsewhere.”[fn]
“Then make me a delicious meal that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I can bless you before I die.”
“‘Bring me game and make a delicious meal for me to eat so that I can bless you in the LORD’s presence before I die.’
“Go to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, and I will make them into a delicious meal for your father — the kind he loves.
His mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey me and go get them for me.”
But his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you? ”
He answered, “I am Esau your firstborn son.”
Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably. “Who was it then,” he said, “who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you came in, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed! ”
When Esau heard his father’s words, he cried out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, my father! ”
Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father! ” And Esau wept loudly.[fn]
The LORD was standing there beside him,[fn] saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying.
Then Jacob made a vow: “If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I’m making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear,
“This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God’s house, and I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me.”
She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “The LORD heard that I am neglected and has given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.[fn]
Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; yes, he has heard me and given me a son,” so she named him Dan.[fn]
