So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.
“for we are about to destroy this place because the outcry against its people is so great before the LORD, that the LORD has sent us to destroy it.”
Jacob asked the men at the well, “My brothers! Where are you from? ”
“We’re from Haran,” they answered.
“There we were, binding sheaves of grain in the field. Suddenly my sheaf stood up, and your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.”
But they replied, “We, your servants, were twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now[fn] with our father, and one is no longer living.”
Then they said to each other, “Obviously, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his deep distress when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this trouble has come to us.”
“We were twelve brothers, sons of the same[fn] father. One is no longer living, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.’
Then Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me. We will be on our way so that we may live and not die — neither we, nor you, nor our dependents.
But the men were afraid because they were taken to Joseph’s house. They said, “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time. They intend to overpower us, seize us, make us slaves, and take our donkeys.”
“If it is found with one of us, your servants, he must die, and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”
“What can we say to my lord? ” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed your servants’ iniquity. We are now my lord’s slaves — both we and the one in whose possession the cup was found.”

and said to him, “We are unclean because of a human corpse. Why should we be excluded from presenting the LORD’s offering at its appointed time with the other Israelites? ”
Moses said to Hobab, descendant of Reuel the Midianite and Moses’s relative by marriage, “We’re setting out for the place the LORD promised, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel.”
“Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?
“But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
“Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart,[fn] saying: The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, fortified to the heavens. We also saw the descendants of the Anakim there.’
“You answered me, ‘We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight just as the LORD our God commanded us.’ Then each of you put on his weapons of war and thought it would be easy to go up into the hill country.
“He did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive here today.
“But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
“You are not to do as we are doing here today; everyone is doing whatever seems right in his own sight.
“unless, when we enter the land, you tie this scarlet cord to the window through which you let us down. Bring your father, mother, brothers, and all your father’s family into your house.
“If anyone goes out the doors of your house, his death will be his own fault, and we will be innocent. But if anyone with you in the house should be harmed, his death will be our fault.
They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.”
Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where do you come from? ”
“So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey; go and meet them and say, “We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.” ’
All the leaders answered them, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?
“The LORD drove out before us all the peoples, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will worship the LORD, because he is our God.”
Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech and who is Shechem that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal, and isn’t Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?
The Philistine leaders went to her and said, “Persuade him to tell you[fn] where his great strength comes from, so we can overpower him, tie him up, and make him helpless. Each of us will then give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God for us to determine if we will have a successful journey.”
He answered him, “We’re traveling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to Bethlehem in Judah, and now I’m going to the house of the LORD.[fn] No one has taken me into his home,
“What should we do about wives for the survivors? We’ve sworn to the LORD not to give them any of our daughters as wives.”
“But we can’t give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had sworn, “Anyone who gives a wife to a Benjaminite is cursed.”
“Then we’ll be like all the other nations: our king will judge us, go out before us, and fight our battles.”
“All right,” Jonathan replied, “we’ll cross over to the men and then let them see us.
Jonathan then said to David, “Go in the assurance the two of us pledged in the name of the LORD when we said, ‘The LORD will be a witness between you and me and between my offspring and your offspring forever.’ ” Then David left, and Jonathan went into the city.
But David’s men said to him, “Look, we’re afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces! ”
“We raided the south country of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the south country of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag.”
All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.[fn]
“On the third day after I gave birth, she also had a baby and we were alone. No one else[fn] was with us in the house; just the two of us were there.
The king of Israel had said to his servants, “Don’t you know that Ramoth-gilead is ours, but we’re doing nothing to take it from the king of Aram? ”
