But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with asphalt and pitch. She placed the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.
God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
In addition the LORD said to him, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, his hand was diseased, resembling snow.[fn]
Then Moses went back to his father-in-law, Jethro, and said to him, “Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt and see if they are still living.”
Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”
Moses said to him, “When I have left the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know the earth[fn] belongs to the LORD.
But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand firm and see the LORD’s salvation that he will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me! ”
They took from Moses’s presence all the contributions that the Israelites had brought for the task of making the sanctuary. Meanwhile, the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning.
After Moses gave an order, they sent a proclamation throughout the camp: “Let no man or woman make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” So the people stopped.
“But if it reappears in the fabric, the warp or weft, or any leather article, it has broken out again. You must burn whatever is contaminated.
“They must no longer offer their sacrifices to the goat-demons that they have prostituted themselves with. This will be a permanent statute for them throughout their generations.
“If many years are still left, he must pay his redemption price in proportion to them based on his purchase price.
“But if he does not redeem the field or if he has sold it to another man, it is no longer redeemable.
“But at fifty years old he is to retire from his service in the work and no longer serve.
While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the LORD’s anger burned against the people, and the LORD struck them with a very severe plague.
“You are to guard the sanctuary and the altar so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.
“The Israelites must never again come near the tent of meeting, or they will incur guilt and die.
“Anyone who touches a body of a person who has died, and does not purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person will be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean because the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him.
Balak sent officials again who were more numerous and higher in rank than the others.
But the donkey said, “Am I not the donkey you’ve ridden all your life until today? Have I ever treated you this way before? ”
“No,” he replied.
“And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your ancestors’ place adding even more to the LORD’s burning anger against Israel.
“If you turn back from following him, he will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them.”
“But the LORD was angry with me because of you[fn] and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘That’s enough! Do not speak to me again about this matter.
“You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him.
“Today, recognize and keep in mind that the LORD is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other.
“But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
“You are to gather all its spoil in the middle of the city square and completely burn the city and all its spoil for the LORD your God. The city is to remain a mound of ruins forever; it is not to be rebuilt.
“Then all the people will hear about it, be afraid, and no longer behave arrogantly.
“However, he must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire many horses, for the LORD has told you, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
“This is what you requested from the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die! ’
“provided you keep every one of these commands I am giving you today and follow them, loving the LORD your God and walking in his ways at all times — you are to add three more cities to these three.
“Then everyone else will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything evil like this among you.
“The LORD will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”
saying, “I am now 120 years old; I can no longer act as your leader.[fn] The LORD has told me, ‘You will not cross the Jordan.’
“For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the LORD now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead!
“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get provisions ready for yourselves, for within three days you will be crossing the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you to inherit.’ ”
“When we heard this, we lost heart, and everyone’s courage failed[fn] because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.
When all the Amorite kings across the Jordan to the west and all the Canaanite kings near the sea heard how the LORD had dried up the water of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, they lost heart and their courage failed because of the Israelites.
And the day after they ate from the produce of the land, the manna ceased. Since there was no more manna for the Israelites, they ate from the crops of the land of Canaan that year.
“I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. My strength for battle and for daily tasks[fn] is now as it was then.
The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies.
So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace.[fn] It is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites today.
Then the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many troops. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one can go with you,’ he can go. But if I say about anyone, ‘This one cannot go with you,’ he cannot go.”
