Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female slaves so that they could bear children,

So she said to Abraham, “Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac! ”

But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed[fn] about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac,

Then she said, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Go sleep with her, and she’ll bear children for me[fn] so that through her I too can build a family.”

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, Leah’s tent, and the tents of the two concubines,[fn] but he found nothing. When he left Leah’s tent, he went into Rachel’s tent.

Pharaoh’s daughter went down to bathe at the Nile while her servant girls walked along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds, sent her slave girl, took it,

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work ​— ​you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates.

Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

“When a man sells his daughter as a concubine,[fn] she is not to leave as the male slaves do.

“When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod, and the slave dies under his abuse,[fn] the owner must be punished.[fn]

“When a man strikes the eye of his male or female slave and destroys it, he must let the slave go free in compensation for his eye.

“If the ox gores a male or female slave, he must give thirty shekels of silver[fn] to the slave’s master, and the ox must be stoned.

“Do your work for six days but rest on the seventh day so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave as well as the resident alien may be refreshed.

“Whatever the land produces during the Sabbath year can be food for you ​— ​for yourself, your male or female slave, and the hired worker or alien who resides with you.

“Your male and female slaves are to be from the nations around you; you may purchase male and female slaves.

“but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. Do not do any work ​— ​you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the resident alien who lives within your city gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.

“Do not covet your neighbor’s wife or desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

“You will rejoice before the LORD your God ​— ​you, your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the Levite who is within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.

“You are to eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God chooses ​— ​you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, and the Levite who is within your city gates. Rejoice before the LORD your God in everything you do,

“take an awl and pierce through his ear into the door, and he will become your slave for life. Also treat your female slave the same way.

“Rejoice before the LORD your God in the place where he chooses to have his name dwell ​— ​you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, the Levite within your city gates, as well as the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow among you.

“Rejoice during your festival ​— ​you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, as well as the Levite, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates.

“and now you have attacked my father’s family today, killed his seventy sons on top of a large stone, and made Abimelech, the son of his slave woman, king over the citizens of Shechem ‘because he is your brother’ ​— ​

“although there’s straw and feed for the donkeys, and I have bread and wine for me, my concubine, and the servant[fn] with us. There is nothing we lack.”

So he asked, “Who are you? ”

“I am Ruth, your servant,” she replied. “Take me under your wing,[fn] for you are a family redeemer.”

Making a vow, she pleaded, “LORD of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant’s affliction, remember and not forget me, and give your servant a son, I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut.”[fn]

“Don’t think of me as a wicked woman; I’ve been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment.”

She knelt at his feet and said, “The guilt is mine, my lord, but please let your servant speak to you directly. Listen to the words of your servant.

“Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the LORD is certain to make a lasting dynasty for my lord because he fights the LORD’s battles. Throughout your life, may evil[fn] not be found in you.

“there will not be remorse or a troubled conscience for my lord because of needless bloodshed or my lord’s revenge. And when the LORD does good things for my lord, may you remember me your servant.”

She stood up, paid homage with her face to the ground, and said, “Here I am, your servant, a slave to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”

When David returned home to bless his household, Saul’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. “How the king of Israel honored himself today! ” she said. “He exposed himself today in the sight of the slave girls of his subjects like a vulgar person would expose himself.”

“and I will dishonor myself and humble myself even more.[fn][fn] However, by the slave girls you spoke about, I will be honored.”

“Now therefore, I’ve come to present this matter to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought: I must speak to the king. Perhaps the king will grant his servant’s request.

When he had come near her, the woman asked, “Are you Joab? ”

“Listen to the words of your servant,” she said to him.

She replied, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the LORD your God, ‘Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne.’

“She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while your servant was asleep. She laid him in her arms, and she put her dead son in my arms.

My house guests[fn] and female servants regard me as a stranger;

I am a foreigner in their sight.

If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants

when they made a complaint against me,

Turn to me and be gracious to me.

Give your strength to your servant;

save the son of your female servant.

LORD, I am indeed your servant;

I am your servant, the son of your female servant.

You have loosened my bonds.

Beauty[fn] is stripped;[fn]

she is carried away;

her ladies-in-waiting moan

like the sound of doves

and beat their breasts.
