With a following לְ (or suffix), most of these words are frequently in the sense of on the east (west, etc.) of..., as Joshua 8:13 לָעִיר מִיָּם on the west of the city, מִקֶּדֶם לְ Genesis 3:24, מִצְּפוֺן לְ (construct Ges§ 130 a, n.) Joshua 8:11, 13; Joshua 24:30, מִימִינֶ֑ךָ Psalm 91:7, מִתַּחַת לְ Genesis 1:7, מִמַּעַל לְ Genesis 22:9, מִבֵּית לְ Leviticus 16:2: מֵאַחֲרֵי behind Exodus 14:19 מִצַּד בֵּיתְאֵל beside Bethel Joshua 12:9, מִצִּדּוֺ beside it 1 Samuel 6:8, מֵעֵבֶר לַיַּרְדֵּן on the other side of Jordan Numbers 21:1 +; מֵהָֽלְאָה לְ beyond Amos 5:27; tablets written מִשְּׁנֵי עֶבְרֵיהֶם on both their sides, מִכָּלעֲֿבָרָיו Jeremiah 49:32 + (see further the words cited). g. the cause being conceived as regulative, מן occasionally approaches in sense to according to (compare Latin ex more, ex lege), Jonah 3:7 proclaimed in Nineveh מטעם המלך וגדליו at, by, in accordance with, the decree of the king (compare Aramaic H4481 Ezra 6:14; Daniel 2:8): so Job 39:26 (2e (b)) according to Ges Hi.
3. Partitively (a sense connecting with 2a (c), above): —

(b) to designate an individual (rare), Genesis 28:11 and he took מֵאַבְנֵי הַמָּקוֺם (one) of the stones of the place (see Genesis 28:18), Exodus 6:25 מבּנות פוטיאל (one) of the daughters of P., Ezekiel 17:5, 13; Nehemiah 13:28; Psalm 132:11; as subject Leviticus 25:33; Daniel 11:5 the king of the south שָׂרָיו וּמִןֿ and (one) of his captains, Daniel 11:7, compare Jeremiah 41:1; Esther 4:5; 2 Chronicles 26:11; Ruth 2:20 מִגֹּאֲלֵנוּ הוא he is (one) of our kinsmen, Exodus 2:6.

(for שְׂעָרָה as a noun of individual meaning see Ges§ 122 t Dr), compare 2 Samuel 14:11; 1 Kings 1:52. (Probably a rhetorical application of the partitive sense, though the explanation 'starting from one' = 'even one' would also be possible. bdb058101 is used similarly after negative and interrogative particles, not merely with collective nouns, as bdb058102bdb058103 nought have they of knowledge (Qor 18:4), but also with nouns of unity, as Qor 3:55 Ye have not bdb058104 aught of (= any) god, except Him; Qor19:19 dost thou perceive bdb058105 even one of them? Qor 6:59 there falleth not bdb058106 even a single leaf (noun of individual meaning) without His knowing it. See further Thes, and WAG. ii. § 48 f. b),
(e) (rare) specifying the objects, or elements, of which a Genus consists (the Arabic bdb058107, min of explication, WAG. ii. § 48 g): Genesis 6:2 אשׁר בחרו מכל consisting of all whom they chose, Genesis 7:22; Genesis 9:10; Leviticus 11:32 (מכל), 1 Chronicles 5:18; Jeremiah 40:7 (מאשׁר); Jeremiah 44:28 and they shall know דְּבַרמִֿי יָקוּם מִמֶּנִּי וּמֵהֶם whose word shall stand, consisting of me and of them (defining the genus embraced by ׃מי compare bdb058108 both (of them), Abel as well as Cain, and Qor 3:193: Wl.c.). — On מֵאַיִן Jeremiah 10:6, 7, see אַיִן near the end.
4. of time — namely
a. as marking the terminus a quo, the anterior limit of a continuous period, from, since Deuteronomy 9:24 מִיּוֺם דַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם from the day of my (first) knowing you (so 1 Samuel 7:2; 1 Samuel 8:8 +); 1 Samuel 18:9 מהיום ההוא וָהָֽלְאָה from that day and onwards, simil. 1 Samuel 16:13; 1 Samuel 30:25 (Haggai 2:15, 18 apparently of time backwards); מֵאָז from the time of....; מִןהַֿבֶּטֶן from the womb Judges 13:5, 7, מִבֶּטֶן אִמִּי Judges 16:17 +; מִימֵי ֗֗֗ Hosea 10:9; Isaiah 23:7; Jeremiah 36:2 +; מִיָּמֶיךָ idiomatic = since thou wast born † 1 Samuel 25:28; 1 Kings 1:6 (מִיָּמָיו), Job 38:12; מִקֶּדֶם from antiquity Habakkuk 1:12; Psalm 74:12; Isaiah 42:14 הֶחֱשֵׁיתִי מֵעוֺלָם I have been silent since old time; מֵעַתָּה from now, hence-forth Jeremiah 3:4 +, מִיּוֺם from to-day Isaiah 43:13; Ezekiel 48:35, מןהֿיום הזה Haggai 2:19. See also 5c, 7 c. Compare Exodus 33:6 מֵהַר חוֺרֵב from Horeb, Hosea 13:4 I am י׳ thy God מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם.
b. as marking the period immediately succeeding the limit, after: Genesis 38:24 כְּמִשְׁלשׁ חֳדָשִׁים after about three months it was told Judah, מִיָּמִים רַבִּים Joshua 23:1; Ezekiel 38:8, מִיָּמִים after (some) days, † Judges 11:4; Judges 14:8; Judges 15:1, מִיֹּמַיִם after two days † Hosea 6:2; מֵרֹב יָמִים Isaiah 24:22: more frequently with קֵץ or קָצֶה, Genesis 4:3 מִקֵּץ יָמִים, Genesis 8:3; Joshua 3:2 + often; Deuteronomy 14:28 מִקְצֵה שָׁלשׁ שָׁנִים, Deuteronomy 15:1 שָׁנִים מִקְצֵה שֶׁבַע (by which is meant not the actual end of the three or seven years, but the period when the third or seventh year has arrived); מִמָּחֳרָת after the morrow (had arrived) = on the morrow, Genesis 19:34 + often; מֵהַבֹּקֶר 2 Samuel 2:27. — 2 Samuel 23:4 מִמָּטָר; Isaiah 53:11 מֵעֲמַל נַפְשׁוֺ; perhaps Isaiah 29:18 (Kö581). Compare 2 Samuel 20:5 and he delayed מןהֿמועד beyond the appointed time.
c. in such phrases, however, מִן sometimes (compare 1c) loses its significance: thus מֵאָז 2 Samuel 15:34; Isaiah 16:13 not from former time, but in former time, formerly, Genesis 6:4 הַגִּבּוֺרִים אֲשֶׁר מֵעוֺלָם which were of old, Joshua 24:2 dwelt of old, Psalm 77:6 days מִקֶּדֶם aforetime, מֵאַחֲרֵי Deuteronomy 29:21 — † מִקָּרוֺב literally from near, i.e. recently Deuteronomy 32:17, of short duration Job 20:5, shortly Ezekiel 7:8; at hand (in a local sense, 1c) Jeremiah 23:23.

b. metaphor not of actual space, but of classes of objects, to express idiomatically the idea ofcomprehension, so that the two prepositions may be often represented by both...and: Genesis 19:4 מִנַּעַר וְעַדזָֿקֵן from young to old (i.e. both included) = both young and old, Genesis 19:11; 1 Samuel 5:9 + מִקָּטֹן וְעַדגָּֿדוֺל = both great and small, Jeremiah 6:13 מִקְּטַנָּם וְעַדגְּֿדוֺלָם from the least of them even to the greatest of them, ib. וְעַדכֹּֿהֵן מִנָּבִיא from the prophet even to the priest every one dealeth falsely, Exodus 9:25 + מאדם ועד בהמה both man and beast, Exodus 11:5 עד ֗֗֗ פּרעה מבכור וגו׳ השׁפחה בכור, Exodus 13:15; Numbers 6:4; Deuteronomy 29:10 עד שֹׁאב מימיך מחֹטב עציך, Joshua 8:25 + מאישׁ ועד אשׁה, 1 Samuel 15:3 (4 pairs), 1 Samuel 22:19; 1 Kings 5:13; 2 Kings 17:9 = 2 Kings 18:8, Isaiah 10:18 מנפשׁ ועד בשׂר = both soul and body, Jeremiah 9:9; after a word implying a negative = either... or Genesis 14:23; Genesis 31:24, 29 מטוב עד רע either good or evil. The עַד may be repeated, if required: Genesis 6:7 עדבֿהמה עד רמשׂ ועדעֿוף השׁמים מאדם (so Genesis 7:23), Exodus 22:3; Joshua 6:21; Judges 15:5 מִגָּדִישׁ וְעַדקָֿמָה וְעַדכֶּֿרֶם זָ֑יִת, Judges 20:48; 1 Samuel 30:19: without מן, Leviticus 11:42; Numbers 8:4. 6. In comparisons, beyond, above, hence in English than: so constantly: namely
a. when an object is compared with another distinct from itself, Judges 14:18 מַהמָּֿתוֺק מִדְּבַשׁ what is sweet away from, beyond in excess of, honey ? i.e. in our idiom, what is sweeter than honey ? Leviticus 21:10 הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֺל מֵאֶחָיו the priest that is great above his brethren, Numbers 14:12; Ezekiel 28:3 חָכָם מִדָּנִאֵל wiser than Daniel, Psalm 119:72 + very often; Hosea 2:9 כִּי טוֺב לִי אָז מֵעָ֑תָּה; with an infinitive (sometimes with לְ) as subject, Genesis 29:10 טוֺב תִּתִּי אֹתָהּ לְךָ מִתִּתִּי אֹתָהּ וגו׳ better is my giving her to thee than my giving her to another, Exodus 14:12; 1 Samuel 15:22; Proverbs 21:9, 19; Proverbs 25:7; Psalm 118:8; Psalm 118:9 +; with verbs, Genesis 19:9 עתה נָרַע לְךָ מֵהֶם now we will harm thee beyond them, more than them, Genesis 25:23 לְאֹם מִלְאֹם יֶאֱמַץ, Genesis 26:16; Genesis 29:30 אתרֿחל מִלֵּאָה ויאהב גםֿ, Genesis 38:26 צָֽדְקָה מִמֶּנִּי, Genesis 48:19 יִגְדַּל מִמֶּנּוּ, Judges 2:19 השׁחיתו מאבותם they have done corruptly more than their fathers, 1 Samuel 2:29; 2 Samuel 20:6; 1 Kings 1:37; 1 Kings 14:9; Jeremiah 5:3; Ezekiel 5:6 + often; = in, preference to, above, Psalm 45:8; Psalm 52:5 (twice in verse); Hosea 6:6; Habakkuk 2:16, after בחר Jeremiah 8:3; Job 7:15; Job 36:21; Psalm 84:11 (מִדּוּר) +: note also נֹפֵל מִן Job 12:3; Job 13:2to (Ew Ges and others Hi; al. De); שֹׁנֶה מִן different from Esther 1:7; Esther 3:8.
b. when an object is compared with a group or multitude of which it forms one, especially with מִכֹּל, Genesis 3:1 מִכֹּל חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה עָרוּם subtil out of all beasts of the field, or beyond, above all (other) beasts, Genesis 3:14 cursed above all cattle (but without implying any judgment whether other cattle are cursed likewise), Genesis 37:3 Israel loved Joseph מִכָּלבָּֿנָיו out of all his sons, or above all his (other) sons, Deuteronomy 7:7; Deuteronomy 33:24 בָּרוּךְ מִבָּנִים אָשֵׁר blessed above sons be Asher, Judges 5:24 תְּבֹרַח מִנָּשִׁים blessed above women be Jael, 1 Samuel 9:2b 1 Samuel 15:33 כֵּן תִּשְׁכַּל מִנָּשִׁים אִמֶּ֑ךָ, 1 Samuel 18:30; Jeremiah 17:9 עָקֹב מִכֹּל deceitful above all things, Psalm 45:3; Songs 5:10 דָּגוּל מֵרְבָבָה (compare בָּחַר מִן above 2a c: ex in eximius, egregius; Iliad 18:431 ὅς σ’, ἐμοὶ ἐκ πάσεων Κρονίδης Ζεὺς ἄλγἐ ἔδωκεν, 3:227 ἔξοχος Ἀργείων... κεφαλήν).
c. sometimes in poetry the idea on which מן is logically dependent, is unexpressed, and must be understood by the reader, Isaiah 10:10 ופסיליהם מירושׁלם and their idols are (more) than (those of) Jerusalem, Micah 7:4 יָשָׁר מִמְּסוּכָה the uprightest is (sharper) than a thorn-hedge (but We from), Job 11:7; Job 28:18; Psalm 4:8 מֵעֵת beyond (that of) the time when etc. Ecclesiastes 4:17; Ecclesiastes 9:17; compare Ezekiel 15:2.
d. מן not unfrequently expresses the idea of a thing being too much for a person, or surpassing his powers: Genesis 18:14 הֲיִפָּלֵא דָּבָר מי׳ can a thing be too hard for J.? (so Deuteronomy 17:8 +; compare Psalm 131:1; Psalm 139:6 +), Psalm 32:11 קָטֹנְתִּי מִן, Deuteronomy 14:24 כִּי יִרְבֶּה מִמְּךָ הַדֶּרֶךְ = is too great for thee (1 Kings 19:7), 1Ki 32:47 רֵק מִכֶּם : so with עָצַם Genesis 26:16, כָּבֵד be too heavy for Exodus 18:18; Psalm 38:5, מָךְ Leviticus 27:8 (too poor to pay), קָשָׁה Deuteronomy 1:7, צַר be too narrow for, 2 Kings 6:1; Isaiah 49:19, קצר Isaiah 50:2, אָמַץ Psalm 18:18, ירום נמני is too high for me Psalm 61:3, גָּבַר Psalm 65:4; מִמְּךָ הַֽמְעַטJob 15:11 too little for thee ? מִכֶּם הַֽמְעַטNumbers 16:9; Isaiah 7:13; Ezekiel 34:18 (see מְעַט; also on Ezekiel 16:20); often with an infinitive, as Genesis 4:13 גָּדוֺל עֲוֺנִי מִנְּשׂוֺא is greater than I can bear, Genesis 30:7 their substance was רַב מִשֶּׁבֶת יַחְדָּו literally great beyond dwelling together = too great for (their) dwelling together, Exodus 12:4; Judges 7:2 מִתִּתִּי רַב = too great for me to give, 1 Samuel 25:17b 1 Kings 8:64 רַב מֵהָכִיל, Isaiah 28:20; Isaiah 33:19; Isaiah 59:1; Habakkuk 1:13; Psalm 40:6; Ruth 1:12: note especially רַב מִן it is more than that... (= there is enough of), Exodus 9:28; 1 Kings 12:28, followed by substantive Ezekiel 44:6 (see רַב); and Isaiah 49:6 נָקֵל מִהְיוֺתְךָ לִי עֶבֶד לְהָקִים וגו׳ too light for thy being my servant was it to raise up, etc., Ezekiel 8:17 הֲנָקֵל לְבֵית יִשְׂר׳ מֵעֲשׂוֺת וגו׳ was it too trifling to the house of Israel for the doing etc. (less than the doing etc. deserved) ? (but ? read עֲשׂוֺת on analogue of 1 Kings 16:31).
7. מן is prefixed to an infinitive:
a. with a causal force (rare), from, on account of, through (compare 2f): Deuteronomy 7:7, 8 אֶתְכֶם מֵאַהֲבַת י׳ through J.'s loving you = because J. loved you, Deuteronomy 9:28 (compare Deuteronomy 1:27 בְּ) 2 Samuel 3:11 מִיִּרְאָתוֺ אֹתוֺ = because he feared him, Isaiah 48:4 מִדַּעְתִּי ֗֗֗ = because I knew... So in מִבְּלִי ֗֗֗, מִבִּלְתִּי.

So in חָלִילָהלִֿי מֵעֲשׂוֺת that I should not do Genesis 44:17 +.
(b) still more concisely, especially in poetry, with a noun alone: 1 Samuel 15:23 has rejected thee מִמֶּלֶךְ from (being) king (1 Samuel 15:26 מֶלֶךְ מִהְיוֺת), Leviticus 26:43 מֵהֶם, Isaiah 7:8 יֵחַת מֵעָם shall be shattered from (being) a people, that it be no more a people, Isaiah 17:1 מוּסָר מֵעִיר, Isaiah 25:2b; Isaiah 52:14 מֵאִישׁ מַרְאֵהוּ כֵּן מִשְׁחַת marred away from (being) a man('s), Jeremiah 2:25 מִיָּחֵף, Jeremiah 17:16 מֵרֹעֶה, Jeremiah 48:2 וְנַכְרִיתֶנָּה מִגּוֺי, Jeremiah 48:42 מֵעָם, Psalm 8:6 hast made him lack but little מאלהים ut non esset Deus, Psalm 83:5 מִגּוֺי, Proverbs 30:2 אָנֹכִי מֵאִישׁ בַּעַר too boorish to be a man: compare Daniel 4:13; 1 Kings 15:13 וַיְסִרֶהָ מִגְּבִירָה removed her from (being) queen-mother, Ezekiel 16:41 וִהִשְׁבַּתִּיךְ מִזּוֺנָה; and even to express absolutely the non-existence of a thing not named in the principal clause, as Isaiah 23:1 שֻׁדַּד מִבַּיִת כִּי so that there is no house, Ezekiel 12:19 (Ezekiel 32:15), Ezekiel 25:9 מֵהֶעָרִים, Hosea 9:11 (3 times in verse); Hosea 9:12; Micah 3:6; Haggai 1:10 מִטָּ֑ל, Zechariah 7:14; Zechariah 9:8; Psalm 39:3; Psalm 49:15 מִזְּבֻללֿוֺ so that it has no dwelling, Psalm 52:7 יִסָּֽחֲךָ מֵאֹהֶל pluck thee up tentless, Psalm 109:24 is lean מִשָּׁ֑מֶן so that there is no fatness, Job 28:11; Job 33:21; Job 34:30b.
