His kingdom started with Babylon, Erech,[fn] Accad,[fn] and Calneh,[fn] in the land of Shinar.[fn]

Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said to him, “What have you done to us? How did I sin against you that you have brought such enormous guilt on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”

“When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

“Your house and kingdom will endure before me[fn] forever, and your throne will be established forever.’ ”

Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was established in Solomon’s hand.

Solomon ruled all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt. They offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.

Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps, one at each end. Nothing like it had ever been made in any other kingdom.

Then the LORD said to Solomon, “Since you have done this[fn] and did not keep my covenant and my statutes, which I commanded you, I will tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.

“Yet I will not tear the entire kingdom away from him. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem that I chose.”

and said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand. I will give you ten tribes,

“ ‘However, I will not take the whole kingdom from him but will let him be ruler all the days of his life for the sake of my servant David, whom I chose and who kept my commands and my statutes.

Jeroboam said to himself, “The kingdom might now return to the house of David.

“tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to you. But you were not like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what is right in my sight.

“As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear they had not found you.

When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs.

As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah killed his servants who had killed his father the king.

King Pul[fn] of Assyria invaded the land, so Menahem gave Pul seventy-five thousand pounds[fn] of silver so that Pul would support him to strengthen his grasp on the kingdom.

Then Hezekiah prayed before the LORD:

LORD God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you are God ​— ​you alone ​— ​of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.

Now, LORD our God, please save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God ​— ​you alone.

wandering from nation to nation

and from one kingdom to another,

Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all.

along with all his reign, his might, and the incidents that affected him and Israel and all the kingdoms of the surrounding lands.

When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mobilized the house of Judah and Benjamin ​— ​one hundred eighty thousand fit young soldiers ​— ​to fight against Israel to restore the reign to Rehoboam.

“However, they will become his servants so that they may recognize the difference between serving me and serving the kingdoms of other lands.”

“Don’t you know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?

“And now you are saying you can assert yourselves against the LORD’s kingdom, which is in the hand of one of David’s sons. You are a vast number and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.[fn]

He also removed the high places and the shrines[fn] from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom experienced peace under him.
