and spoke to them according to the young men’s advice, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy,[fn] but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.”
The governors who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them food and wine as well as a pound[fn] of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but because of the fear of God, I didn’t do this.
Each[fn] day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days. But I didn’t demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
If his sons receive honor, he does not know it;
if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.
who despises the one rejected by the LORD[fn]
but honors those who fear the LORD,
who keeps his word whatever the cost,
You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!

Who planned this against Tyre,
the bestower of crowns,
whose traders are princes,
whose merchants are the honored ones of the earth?
The LORD of Armies planned it,
to desecrate all its glorious beauty,
to disgrace all the honored ones of the earth.
Therefore, in the east honor the LORD!
In the coasts and islands of the west
honor the name of the LORD,
the God of Israel.
The earth staggers like a drunkard
and sways like a hut.
Earth’s rebellion weighs it down,
and it falls, never to rise again.
Therefore, a strong people will honor you.
The cities of violent nations will fear you.
You have added to the nation, LORD.

“Because you are precious in my sight
and honored, and I love you,

to beautify the place of my sanctuary,

You who tremble at his word,
hear the word of the LORD:
“Your brothers who hate and exclude you
for my name’s sake have said,
‘Let the LORD be glorified
so that we can see your joy! ’
But they will be put to shame.”
Thanksgiving will come out of them,
a sound of rejoicing.
I will multiply them, and they will not decrease;
I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.
Jerusalem has sinned grievously;
therefore, she has become an object of scorn.[fn]
All who honored her now despise her,
for they have seen her nakedness.
She herself groans and turns away.
